WASHINGTON OITY: SATURDAY. December 7. 1872. Holiday Goods Now is the time for dealers in all classes of holiday goods to advertise their wares. The larges: and bes" purchasers almost invariably make their selections carly in the season while | stocks are full ard varied, and before the rush © customers bas set in. to make known to the public the attractioas they propose to hold out are therefore sure to reap the richest harvest. We need hardly add, that t of Taw STAR should be used. Asan advertis'ng medium it is concededly worth all the other papers in the city added together. Ent sling Alliances Senator Schurz seems to have a shrewd dread t the danger from ngling alliances,” as wn by his Senator Tf ass take up the same pos! jon, ng to be exco chureh, tho iding to the right of the other liberal ton and Hamilton of ‘Texas, will probably go entirely over to the democracy. Despite the distinction made by Mr. Schurz, we suspect that he will tind the boundary betwixt himself and the democracy a very shadowy one. Postal Telegraphy, Pro and Con. As the postal telegraph question is certain to | have a good deal of prominence, it is worth while to know what those immediately inter- ested think about it. William 8. Orton, presi- dent of the Western Union Telegraph Com- pany, who is described as “a Mr. Boutwell illuminated,” has been interviewed by Mr. George Alfred Townsend. He states that there are about 165,000 miles of magnetic wire in the | United States, of which the Western Union | Company will control, January 1, 1373, 149,000 miles. The telegraphs of the world, he says, | except inthe United States, are now operated | ata lone, saving only submarine cables, nearly — allof which are private property. The West- err Union employs, of all classes, about 8,000 persons. Mr. Orton thinks there is no essential postal character to the telegraph wire. They are both instrumentalities of communication; but the telegraph cannot be made reliable for | figures, calculations, or punctuation; and the wails are requisite every night to confirm by letter the merchants’ messages of the day. “The difference between the cost of 10 tons of mail-matter going by train between New York and Washington, and 100 tons, is scarcely ap- precis ‘The train is destined to go; the ca- pacity ot none of our railroads is tested with mail-matier, the cost of gotng is increased little or pone. e havea wire between t have 500 messages in a , the ful! capacity of one dqitional 109 messages are € increase amounts to the same as if d were obliged to lay uew track and juipment and men; for, when one more businese than it can ‘do, another i. ow, none of the railrouts u'mest with mati-matter; bat ires of the Western Union Comp ny are » the full € y. It was adopted in England because the telegraph companies were Without enterprise, and did not aim to make themeclves a universal convenience. Here, telegraphy has arisen among the people, kept abead of their necessities, and built up a news- paper press which is the wonder of the era. In conclusion, Mr. Orton say: “I admit that the government, under the law of ISe, may take our lines. I do not see the need or good policy of doing it. If it be done, we expect manly and generous treatment; for we bave exerted ourselves to do our whole duty responsibly, and with the fullest citizen and luereantile enterprise.” All parties here are getting disgusted with the miserabie squabbles of the contending factions in Louisiana and Alabama. We don’t believe anybody in Washington from the President own would wear crape if the earth should open and swallow up every one of the political bam- mere down there who are just now creating thie pother for their selfish eh evs. Those who are the first | do this thoroughly the colnmns | urman, men- | position on the | municated from the repub- | extended ander the government | aR ReJen-e diy, 1988. ss MO Breve.
