Bditor, Beading Matter on Every Page. WASHINGTON CITY: SATURDAY. Nevember 30, 1972. The Death of Horace Greeley. ‘The papers are alLhaving their say in regard % the death of Mr. Greeley, and in recognition bis varied powers and great public services. Bat his record has been too conspicuous up to the very bour of his death to make it necessary to recail to the American people the principal events of his career. He was unquestionably the best known man in America. Both his abilites and hts eccentricities served to make Bim ro. His autobiography had the same sort of interest to the public as that of Franklin, whose early career his so much resembled, though in ch*racter there was no resembiance betwet the cool, shrewd. diplomatic philosopher of the Fevolution and our impulsive, kind-hearted, free-handed “modern Franklin.” His style, strong, simple, and direct, was like that of Franklin. His wonderful capacity for labor, and his delight in controversy kept him con- stantly before the public, either through the Press or on the rostrum, and made his name a household word. Mr. Greeley is the last of the trio of great Journalists who have occupied so important a Position before the public. Raymond, the youngest of the three, went first, then Bennett, and now Greeley. Like Raymend, Mr. Greeley made the mistake of leaving the peculiar fleld in which be was master to seek distinction in public life; and, though he showed wonderfal ability and energy in his late campaign career, there can be no doubt that the enormous strain upon bim, physically and mentally, in those few weeks sapped the resources that would have given him years of added life in the qulet par- sult of hisfamiliar avocation. His sudden death im the apparent fall possession of his great facultics teaches s lewon to American youth, that while imitating his Industry, honesty and Dublie spirit, they shall take care not to allow even an honorable ambition te tempt thein to tamper With their powers of endurance. << - ——__ “Hea. The New York the above head tor « text—argues that it is about time that a little discrimination should be exercised in the prefix of this title to men in public posi- tions? Mr. Jefferson opposed all such handies to names, and in « correspondence with ex- President Pierce, soon after the war commenced, Mr. Seward referred, to the fact, sanctioned by Webster, as Secretary of State, that ex-Presl- dents were officially addressed as “eaq.,” which is universally regarded asthe appropriate ap- pendage to the name of a gentleman or a> edu- cated man. Since the time of Jefferson all this has been changed, and the “Hon.” title isapplied miscellaneously to members of Congress and village aldermen. In Washington, what with Congress and our District Legislature, “Honor- ables” are thicker than Brigadier Generals were during the war. We have, also, a large ingre- dient in our population of ex-members of Con- gress, ex-Bureau and Cabinet officers, &c., all of whom are “Hon.” for life; and altogether it is ratber a mark of distinction and cxclusiveness to be plain “Mister” in Washington. Judging from the Commercial’s sorrowful plaint they have the “Hon. tetion pretty bad in New York, too, and that paper remarks with some heat that while we are justly ridiculed by foreigners for sham Generals, Colonels, and Captains, it is really “not half as ridiculous to call a man of fine presence by & military title to which he has no present claim, as it is to write Honorable before the name of some insignificant ward politician who is now engaged in mixing drinks, weighing out sugar by the pound, or doing a common attorney's work.” -see- It is understood that Gen. Porter conciudes to accept the position of Vice President of the Pullman Palace Car Company, (salary $20,000 per year,) and that Gen. Babcock will succeed him as secretary to President Grant. We shall all be sorry to lose Gen. Porter, who isa thorough gentleman, and an official “ without any nonsense about him,” but since he decides te go, bo man will be more acceptable for his Place than Gen. Babcock, who has earned vast credit by his performance of the duties of Superintendent of Public Build- ings and Grounds. By the way, we trast that through his acceptance of the new Position our community is not to lose the benefit Of his tasteful and judicious dhrection and ener- getic management of the government improve- ments in thi this District. oes —__ ‘The sensation style of articles kept up daily in a morning paper upon the subject of small- Por, would lead to the belief that there is vastly more of that disease in Washington than really exists.
