ree — ‘ AVENING GTAD | FG en SSS | EVENING STAR. CROSEY 8. NOYBS. Bditor. Largest Cirealation in the District | Beading Matter on Every Pages WASHINGTON CITY: TUESDAY..........Nevember 26. 1872. Mr. Carrington and The Star, Mr. E. ©. Carrington, counsel for Prince in the late i suit aginst Tas Star, has a card in @ morning paper in which he speaks very unkindly of as. Amongst other harsh things he says: “But Taz Stag has thonght proper not oy? to aseatl the first jary, bat pd elf red mad ‘ sive and — ng epithets to my brother. ‘and myself, who sppeared a4 counsel for the plain- tiit, and to charge me with soliciting the basi- ‘Bess of the plaintiff, encouraging litigation, and making a champetons, unprofewional and’ dis. honorable contract with our cilent. The charge is upnec: » and is untrue, unmanly and ungenerous. For reasons sati-factory to myself Ishati not resent the Insults of the editors of ‘Tae Staa by violating the Iaw. I do not think that Iwill sue them for libel, althongh they might tp made to pay or apologize. [ have bee member of the bar for more than twenty six years, and I do not believe thas it is in the power of Tae Sram to seriously injure my professional character.” Now, Mr. Carrington is mistaken in what he thinks burts bim, It is not what Taz Star Says about bim that makes him wince. It is the evidence bronght out on the trial that hurts bis feelings, and for this he has only himself to Diame. It was testified to on the trial that Prince, his client-partner, alleged that “no expense was to be entailed upon him” by this trial; that “his time and money were worth more to him than to use it that way;” that “Mr. Carrington volantarily offered to take his case In hand,” and “there was to be a division of whatever the verdict was.” And it will be remembered that when Mr. Car- rington recalled Prince to the stand to give rebutting testimony on other points, he utterly failed to question him upon this matter. As the case stands between Carrington and his client, it just amounts to the question whether the latter ia to be believed when he says that Carrington volunteered to take the case ap on shares. Ato whether an arrangement Of this fort is ‘‘a chatmpetous, unprofessional and dis- honorable contract” or not, ig 8 matter Mr. Carrington must decide for himself. He is a lawyer, and ought to know. ‘Tke couiplete official returns of the voteof the Empire state in the late elections, national and state exhibit some curious resaits. The vote for Presidential electors foots up: Grant, 440,62); Greeley, 352,279; U’Conor, 1,454; temperance candidate, 201. Total, 624,50. Grant’s ma- jority, 56,095. Im 183 the vote stéod: Grant, 439,885, Seymour, 42y,5:3, Seymour's majority 10,000. This does not bear out the assertion that Grant bas fn 1872 no more votes in New York than he bad tm 1963. In fact he has over 20,00 more, while the whole number of democratic votes, including those cast for O’Conor ts 36,000 less now than then. But during these years the number of voters in the state has in- creased nearly 40,000,e0 that the proportions! increase in the number of Grants’ voters over the number in 1568 is nearly 15,000 And this gain to Grant and loss to the oppo- sition are chiefly Mm the cities of New Yor and Brooklyn. The vote of New York city for Sey- mour was 1085 vote for Greeley, 77,798; op- G ; total opposition loss im New York city, 5,490. In the fuil vote of the state Dix rans some 5,000 abead of Grant, while Kernan rans 4,000 abead of Greeley, and Dix’s gains and Ker- nan’s losses are nearly all in New York city and Brooktyn. This year, as in 1868 amd 1264, the governor and state ticket in New York drew ont ® larger vote than the Presidential electors. Lastly, while the Grant vote of 1872 exceeds by nearly 21,000 his vote of 1868, there is a de- ficiency this year in the whole vote of the state, compared with 1868, of 21,05, which, says the New York Herald, may be set down to those Bourbon democrats who, on election day, stayed at home. The Republicon makes a handsome appear- ance in its new dress to-day, on entering upon its thirteenth anniversary. With the exception of Tax Star, which is some ten years {ts senior, the Kepubdiican is now the oldest paper in Wash- ipgton. Not only bave the papers cotemporary with us in the start died out ene by one, but a long Ine of new aspirants fors piace in the journalistic field, have after a more or Jess Strenuoas struggle for existence sunk by the way. We congratulate our neighbor, that though like ourselves, getting on in years, it ike Tas Srax, is perennially young in spirit and vigor. If any of the readers of Tax Star have been & trip to the reported diamond Gelds in the far west, they will doubtless, after reading the expose from San Francisco, pub- lished in our telegraphic column, postpone their trip until a new crop of gems has been planted by the “ original discoverers.” If the report of *Frisco’s investigating committee is correct, this diamond and ruby fraud is one of the most gigantic and barefaced swindles ever perpe- trated. ———_-~+0ee-—____ Some interesting and wholesome reading will be found in Mr. Riddle’s argument to the jury in the Prince-Carrington libel suit against Tar Star for r 20,06 00 ' damages. —+20e- 87° J.B.
