WASHINGTON CITY: ESDAY.......November 14, T Mayor Gaston, of Boston, having replied to Governor Cooke's offer of aid for the sufferers by the fire (noticed In yesterday's Star), that “‘the citizens’ relief committee will accept any pecuniary aid offered, with hearty thanks,” the Governor has issued a call for @ meeting of the cit of Washington, at the hall of the House of Delegates, Metzerott building, at § o'clock this evening, “for the purpose of providing aid and « tial sympathy” for the suffering poor of the aillicted city. Their retire- ment for deliberation thus appears only to have been as a matter of form. ‘The Baltimore Sun, commenting on this ver- dict, says, justly, that though no one can deny that there is need of adequate provisions by law forthe condign punishment of seduction, yet, while a community dealing with such of this case, no such statate and lawfal punishment as should be provided can possibly be ascured, If that force of public opinion which is now spent so questionably would turn itself to the goed purpose of demanding and securing eff- cient legislation for the punishment of the seducer, or the meting out of justice according to the guilt of parties in such cases, it would be far better tor the community in the end.
