= EVENING STAR. CROSBY 8. NOYESN....Editor. Largest Cirealation th the Distriet Reading Matter on Every Page. WASHINGTON CI CITY: @ctober 31, 1872. Plants in Kooms, Considerable has been written lately in regard to the intiuence of plants on the air of rooms, and the preponderance of opinion has been that the effects are bad. A contributor to Appleton’s Journal questions this verdict. He hoids that im the organic world plants and animals form two mutually antagenistic agencies. Animals and fire are constantly vitiating the atm sphere, while plants, on the other hand, are a con- stantly parifying it by absorbing the carbonic acid thar is sent out by the fire and the breath. It is true that plants act as purifiers only in the Presence ot sun-light, ard during darkness they are apt to give out a smal! portion of the car tonic a eviously absorbed; but this fact fely disregarded, as the quantity of gas given out in such circumstances ¥ one of the largest house plants probably does rot equa! the amount that would be omitted by balf a dozen expirations of an ordinary adalt. Moreover, there are grounds for believing that, in addition to the removal of mere car- Lonic acid, plants exerciss a salutary influence upon the oxygen of the air. Thas the well- known influence of sun-tlowers, and other plants with large foliage, in preventing miasma, has been attributed to the fact that the oxygen given out by these plants ts highly ozonized, and that this ozone destroys the miasmatic germs. On the whole, then, there ts no reason for supposing that the foliage of ordinary plants exercises an injurious influence on the air of rooms. An exception should be made in the case of some odorous plants, but it is not easy to give specific directions on this point from the fact that different constitutions are differently affected by the same plant. Certain plants, euch as lilies and others of that family seem to affect some persons, while to others they are perfectly tmmocuous. The flowers of kalmias and rhododendrons are highly narcotic, while the plants, themselves, are harmless. The pollen of the sweet vernal grass affords only a delicious fragrance to some, while to others it gives the painfal “hay fever.” One rule is, bowever, tolerabiy safe, and that is that those plants which are generally kept for the beanty ot foliage, and which are destitute of odor, such Ss ivy and various climbing vines, are quite | harmless. In regard to fuwering and highly- odoriferous plants, personal experience is the | only safe guide. The liberal endowment of our Columbian College by Mr. Corcoran is noticed generally by the press as affording assurance that the | desideratum of a great national university here isto beattained. The New York World con- cludes an editorial by saying: “We are glad on many grounds to hear of Mr. Corcoran's generous intentions toward the Co- Inmbian College.
