SINGULAR PACT DEVELOPED BY A Cus: EXPERT SUMMONED FOR THE DEFENCE. The counsel tor Mrs. Lloyd, now being tried at Leesburg, Va.,on the charge o: having fatally poisoned her little daughter by giving her arse- nic, developed their line of defence yesterday The analysis made by Professor Tonry (the chemical ‘expert summoned by the common- wealth) of certain ot the internal organs taken from the body two months after burial, seems to have been so conclusive in its resuits that the scientific men summoned by the defence virtu- ally admitted that the tests were correet a that arsenic was found; but Professor Elizey developed the startling tact that the medicine administered to the child during her last illness contained arsenic. Dr. Mott, the attending phy- sician, prescribed small doses of bismuth on the day preceding her death. Professor Elizey procured bismuth at Dr. Mott's drug store, ap plied the proper chemical tests and found that it contained traces of arsenic. He repeated the experiments several times with the same results Of course the quantity was infinitesimal, but still possibly large enough to raise the presump- tion that the arsenic found by Professor Toury was derived from this source. Scppzen Deata or Ma. Engx L. Carros, Carer CLeRe or Tue Post Orrice Dararr _ MENT.—A telegram was received at the Post Office department this morning, trom Postmas- ter Smythe, at Albany, New York, stating that Mr. Eben L. Childs, chief clerk of the Post Ontice department, died snddenly in that city last evening. The dispatch does not mention the disease of which he died, but it is believed at the department that it was 'an affection of the heart, of which he had complained fur several months past. Mr. Childs entered the depart- ment from New Hampshire, as corresponding clerk, at a salary of £1,090, (then one of the largest salaries paid.) The department was reorganized in 1836, when Mr. Childs’ salary was increased to $1,400. Subsequently he was transferred to the appointment office as chiet clerk, at a salary of 1,800; and a few years later was made chief clerk of the contract office. In New York Notes, BX-CONSUL BUTLER.
