* SSS * EVENING BTAR. CROSBY 8. HOYES..... as Beading Matter on Every Page. WASHINGTON CITY: WEDNESDAY .......@ctober 23, 1873. American Coal for Foreign Consump- tien. WHAT WE LOSE DY NOT HAVING A GOOD CHAN- Tae Stak was the tirst to note afew days | Precious necks. since the practical effet of the coal famine in England on the United States when it brought the matter very near home to our people by the statement t! on English acce Dist: { Columbia, direct to In ports, to South America, the ‘West Indies, and several other distant points, and that the circumstance was unprecedented in the history of the Cumberland coal trade. We are assured on reliabie authority that seve- Fal hundred thousand tons of American co: have recently been purchased on ore: ferred from England to the United Sta greater portion of these purchases fs doabtiess Of the soft or bitaminous coal of Mar; Pennsylvania, as the consnmption of that k of coal, which somewhat resembles sh production, ia mach ppe than that of anthracite or hard coal. ge number of these English orders will be at the Cumberland mines, and, st perience has demonstrated that the nomical route to tidewater from the yland coal regions is by way of the Chesa- io canal, it 1 safe to predict that a large proportion of the coal shipped from the point mentioned will find an outlet through that channel to Georgetown, whence it will be fur- warded direct to its destination. Several yes- sels have already left that port within a few weeks with cargoes of soft coal for foreign countries, and others are expected to arrive and clear before the close of navigation. Foreign bottoms are mainly employed for this service because of their peeuliar rig and construction, which renders them more seaworthy than the greater American vessels. American coasters are ad- | southern, 42045, mirably adapted to the purpose for which they | “sno: .BYe' ae Se are intended, being of light draught and fast sailers, but it is a sad fact that they cannot suc- cessfully compete with foreign bottoms in the ocean carrying trade, and that our merchant marine is rapidiy disappearing from the sea. But there is a serious drawback to this ship- ment of coai to foreign ports from Georgetown, in the shallowness of the river channel, which will not permit its navigation by vessels drawing more than sixteen feet of water, and by butfew square-riggers of four hundred tons burden. In consequence of this, we were not surprise! i the following, in connection with the of English orders for coal through th ake anil Ohio canal, in the V e xpanse ofeur that syaare- ndred tons or : own for the reason before mentioned, bat they can as | arule recetve at least three-fifths of their cargo at the latter port, and vessels of smaller barden can be wholly laded at the Georgetown coal wharves. ‘We stated the other day that the new connec: tions of the Pennsylvania Cen! ‘ailroad with the Cumberland coal regions would not mate- | really affect the coal shipments of the canal. Further investigation contirms that impres- sion, and develops the fact that while the | amount shipped from Camberland by rail wil jer than ever before, the busi- ness of the canal will not be affected As proof of this we may mention the fact that the receipts at Georgetown by several compa- nies fur a month past have been considerably greater than ever before within the period mentioned. The coal interests of the Baltimore and bio railroad and of Baltimore city will probably be atfected by the rival freight line, | but it isnot believed the ca: ,and consequently | | Georgetown, will suffer from the same cause. Last year the coal shipped to Georgetown by | canal was between $00,000 and 9,000 tons; this year there is every indication that the receipts of last year will be largely increased. | What we want and must here are improved | harbor facilities. Here is a strong case in point | where & neighboring city actually takes our | business right from under our very noses, and — all because our river channel is not deep enough to float a square rigger carrying four bundred tone! We have another instance of the necessity tor a good harbor in the case of the Russian, bargue “Oskar and Georg,” which recently arrived in the Potomac from Scotland with 350 tons of drain pipe, and 300 tons of pig iron Owing to the shallowness of the channel could get no nearer the Washington wharves ‘than off Giesboro Point where she was lightered Of the pipe and still could not make a landing Ali these facts point out“the necessity for en- | tering promptly and with energy upon the work of improving our river channel. The river | commissioners who have been carrying on sar veys under the act of Congress will probably be able to recommend some suitable plan. ee ‘The horse disease bi calamity. Telegrams tells of its appearanca snd increase in Buffalo, Rochester, Boston, New York city and Brooklyn. Many branches of business are entirely snspended for want of animals for transpertation, and commercial men | r to become a public | are becoming seriously alarmed, particularly in New York city, whore, as will be seem by the telegram in another colume, ne disease is startling. rtant a view to moet- ing it as far as ease 44 a sort of some atmos by its « © om large extent of D nds of horses, old nm OF poor. tory ones are taring look, a watery barge from the Lacking cou ere he pulse is quickened he nasa! membranes are ected, and the ears and legs are unnaturally J, the discharge from the nose increases and becomes of £ agreniet Now color; the breath- eased im some cases, labored and severe.” A. severe. attack cam otten be traced to overwork or other éebilitating intlu- ences. It is ad@ed that the affected animals shonld be “allowed plenty of pure air, with liberal dieg Of nourishing and easily Sete food. We refer to thé driving over men, women and children in the streets, by individuals who happen to be in charge of vehicles. It is mainly old and feeble men, weak women and little children who are the victims of these Jehus, and namerous cases occur which do not get into the papers. It will require a few penalties under the criminal code and payment of damages in civil suits here, to remind drivers that pedestrians have the right of weay in the public streets. These drivers “who can’t help it” always manage somehow or other to avoid running against stones, posts, or other obstacles which would endanger their own The payers have now Zot up the phrase “the tidal wave of murdet This ts too bad. ‘The feature of the New York money market yesterday was the scarcity and high rates for tach gold.caused by the withdrawal from th moarket of the gold of one of the Canadian banks.
