WASHINGTON IN CITY: JHURSDAY 10, 1972, The Press om the Elections. ledge of ds 6s7 per cent. ‘The republican and independent press are of wh = af tepemrallaer ny gee accord in holding that the result of the Tues- day's elections is conclusive as to the Presi- Gential contest; and the democratic press virtu- ally concede the same. The Patriot makes a clean breast of it. « Itis useless,” says that paper, “‘to disguise that the state elections on Tuesday have not fulfilled our expectations. The results have disappointed us in many ways, but chietly in demonstrating that the liberals have not shown the strength they claimed with so much confidence.” Continuing im thesame vein the Patriot says: “The opposition entered the canvass under | all the disadvantages of two separate parties, and althcugh co-operating to obtain a common object, they were distinct and necessarily weak- ened by the mere fact of independent, instead of | & % vmted action. Now that this canvass is ended it may be frankly stated that the means of con- ducting the ordinary operations were whoily ir - adequate from the outset, and that the com- plaint in this respect was general and well- founded, as we bare occasion {> know. It wou'd serve no good purpose to exhibit the limited re- sources with which the campaign had to be —— and the utter inability to respond to the popular demand for the essential requisites Of a great political contest.” The Baltimore Gaze‘te says rather dolefully : “Where power is strongly entrenched, it takes more than one conflict to dislodge it,’ and the failure of an attack on one part ot the works may yet be the precursor of better fortune in a general assault.” ‘The Sun sugges’: that “possibly the contest- ants have not been equally matched in those ap- pliances of party warfare which address them- selves to the passions and personal interests of voters.” The American indulge in some aggravating levity at the expense of the Baltimore demo_ erats, who are to have Mr. Greeley as their guest to-day. It implores them to be “kind to the afiticted,” and ‘to forget for this brief time that although he was to themon Monday ‘Hon- est Uncle Horace,’ and ‘Our next President,’ he is now nothing but ‘that infernal old Greeley,’ who bas led them or rather fooled them into the | dark and bitter experiences of crushed hopes and blighted aspirations.” | The New York Herald declares without hesi- tation that it is“‘a victory that settles the Pres- ee WANTS. To the eye of the impartial looker-on it would seem that Horace is already ‘‘distance’” in the race. The World maintains an eloquent silence. ‘The Times thinks the democrats “will begin to realize the folly of their bargain with Horace Greeley,” and that they would have hada better chance of success, and stood much more favora- bly before the people had they nominated a good man from their own pari;. ‘The New York Post draws three lessons from the elections: ist. The utter inutility of the | system cf misrepresentation and fraud which | the opposition has so extensively adopted. 2d. That the shamefal bargain, began at Ciacin- pati and completed at Baltimore, wherein the | party of reform was betrayed and demoralized, and the democratic party dishonored, has not | been accepted by the masses of the voters. 3d. ‘That the majorities tur Grant, in thestates which have thus far voted, will be in November as large agai as they are now for the local can- | didates. The Philadelphia Press concedes that “it Would be folly to allege that the great majority for Hartrantt is the offspringof traud,” and sass * We believe it to be a legitimate majority— the grow bi of several causes that lie so plainly en the surtace of the contest that all may un- derstand and study. General Grant pulled this ticket through. In any ordinary contest it would | have bern beaten out of sight; put his uame, And the tear that its defeat would damage him in November, rallied to it thousands who closed their eves to the proofs we daily spread before them, ard constrained many to certify to the cucarvt 8 of candidates of questionable rec- ord.” ‘The Inywirer draws the moral that “the busi- ness interests of the country incline to the belief that it is wise to «let well enough alone.’ ” The Philadelphia American attributes the | “extraordinary vote” in that state to the alarm caused to the republican voters by the boastings and strenuous exertions of the Gree- leyites. The Cincinnati Comm-rcial concedes that “the returns irom the state of Ohio at large show that the liberal movement has not shown solid strength outside the large towns,” and adds that, “taking yeeterday’s elections altogether, the conclusion is forced that the luck of General Grant, in politics as in war, is likely to be con- firmed by lis re-election to the Presidency. ‘The liberal and democratic organization is not £0 compact that it ean withstand the shock of | Tepeated defeats.” The Springtield Republican, however, puts on | & Spartan face and declares that: On the whole, it would seem as if October would pot altogether anticipate the work ot November, and that Pennsylvania, Indianaand Clio have not taken the job of electinga Presi- | Gent out of the hands of the nation.” | —-.2e-—___ A movement ix on foot to construct a new railroad from Balmore to Philadelphia, and meetings bave been held in Baltimore county recently to take into consideration the merits of the two routes proposed; one called the Belair Toute, and the other the Peach bottom route, which it was contended would pay better than the first, asin addition to the agricultural in- terests to be reached this route would better the slate and other mineral prodacts of that section, which now amounts to twenty-five or thirty thousand tons per annum. Such a route would | also tap the Hanover railroad, which will soon be completed to the Broad Top coal fields of | Pennsylvania, and farthermore there could be | Re objection on account of distance. — —— The Chronicle thinks our gauge is too narrow and our character too “commercial” to be able to appreciate the high-toned m orality that guides that sheet. This is very sad. We had hoped that our gange, if narrow, was yet the strait path that leads to salvation. i tis never too late t> mend. Perhaps with alittle | uncommercial training trom the Caromicle in | the matter of Indian back-pay, and bounty frauds, and a course of Chronicle sanctification and cba-tening in the way of eighty-thousand- | dollar jobs in campaign printing, we may be able to get on the broad road traveled by our Pious neighbor. But on the whole we think We'll stick to the narrow gauge. @ Western gulf, clear weather and northerly winds prevailed in the gulf and south Atlantic states.
