K- RT, of the U.S. navy, who died a tew monthe ago in Europe, took place from the Metropolitan (M. E.) Church at one o'clock this aiternoon. A number of officers ef the navy were present, incladung Admirals Joseph Sraith and Kadtord. ‘The remains were removed trom the Congressional cemetery this forenoon by Mr. Joseph Gawler, the undertaker, and placed in frontor the pulpit. The body was encased in @ heavy oak Coffin, lined with zine, on the top of which Was @ cross of ebony and a’ wreath of immortelles, over which was thrown the na- tonal flag, and on it were a number of floral tributes from friends ot the deceased. PRESIDENT GRANT'S TALK TO THE RED MEN. ‘The Indian delegation of Kiowas, Comanches, Apaches, Caddoes, Arrapahoes, Wuichitas, Wacos, Keechies, owoccaroes, and Delawares, were escorted to the Executive Mansion to-day by Captam Alvord, special Indian commis- sioner. They numbered thirty-six persons, and Were accompanied by ten squaws. They were all dre citul costumes, with a profu- ut and feathers, and, entering the , Were ranged in & semi-circle. ‘The President soon after entered, when they filed before him, and each having his or her name mentioned, shook hands with the President. Among the names were Dog Eater, Ten Beara, Big Mouth, Heap of Bears, and George Wash- ington. Among the spectators were Secretaries Delano, Fish, Belknap, and Boutwell, and the new Colombian Minister, together with a num- ber of other gentlemen and ladies. ‘The President, through the interpreter, in- formed the Indians that the wish aud effort of the government toward them was to advance them in civ‘lization and preserve their lives, by encouraging them in industrial pursuits and making them comfortable bowes. The white people are now s0 numerous aud increasing so rapidly as to crowd the Iudians, and therefore it was necessary that the Indians should no more lead @ roving life, bat have fixed places of abode.
