The prospects of the Greeleyites must be biue Indeed, when they can take comfort from a point made in this column that the vote on Hartranft in Pennsylvania will de no indication Of the strength of his party, and that the true test will be the vote on chief justice.and the three congressmen at large. To realize this grain of comfort it is found necessary, first to refer to us as “one of the administration or- gans,” “the President's home organ,” &c., and Bext to quote only so much of our article as Feferred to the local disaffections in Pennsylva- nia concerning Hartranft. It is our fate, as with Other independent papers, to be designated va- Flously, according to the point to be made in quoting trom us, as “republican,” “conserva- tive,” “radical,” “democrat independ- ent,” and “administration;” and we can stand all this with fortitude as indicating that we keep on a pretty even keel of fairness and independence, but if it is all the same to our Greeley cotemporaties we will thank them no: to call us an “organ.” Pre- tident Grant has had the good sense from the first to eschew anything like organship; but were it otherwise, and organs were as plenty as blackberries, it would not suit Taw Star to be one of them. In the next place, we object ta being half-quoted, with the careful omission of the wholesome lesson conveyed in the context that the real test in Pennsylvania will be upon the officers named, and that if they are elected im October the state is sure for Grant by a sweeping majority in November. It is conceded that there is more or less disaffection to Hart- ranft. It may be that the flood tide of a Presi- dential election canvass may carry him along very nearly up to the front.of the ticket; or he may lag considerably behind. Good judges in Pennsylvania politics differ widely upon this point, but the best and most cautious of them feel assured that the general! state and congres- sional republican ticket will be elected by a majority so decisive as to leave no hope what- ever to the confederates of being able to carry the state in November. But little int interest attaches to the election in Georgia to-day for governor and members of the legislature, because although the demo- rats are somewhat divijled on the question of presidential candidate, yet both sides—Greeley- ites and straightouts—are united on their candi- date for governor, James M. Smith, the present incumbent, who will theretore be elected by a large majority. The republican candidate for governor is Dawson A. Walker, formerly judge of the supreme court of the state. There was 14 Cemocratic majority in the state senate in the last legislature and 173 democratic majority in the house. The republicans have reasonable hopes of gaining in their representation in the legislature and decreasing the democratic ma- jority on the general ticket; farther than this their expectations do not go. In I Bullock, republican, was in the same year, elected by a majority of 6,358. On December 19th, 1871, James Milton Smith was without serious opposition elected to fill the unexpired term of Governor Bullock, who had resigned. At the election for members of congress in 1870, the aggregate democratic mojority for the entire state was 22,566. Baltimore is exercised over its inadequate water supply, and it is proposed by a bill before the city council to take immediate steps for the introduction of water from Gunpowder river as & permasent supply. The cost of the under- taking, as estimated by the engineers, will be $3,500,000, and the time required tor the con struction of the works will be about three years. cise ertue The political state conventions to be held during the present week are the Ohio straight- out democratic, in Columbus tc-morrow; the New York straightout democratic in Albany, and Rbede Island republican in Providence, both on Thursday; and the Missouri straightout demo: returned to the oc2 3t* BW FERGUSON.
