SSNS. EVENING STAR. CROSBY 8. NOYES...... Editor. Lapthetta! in the Distriet | Se ercepion WASHINGTON CITY: SATURDAY........ September 7, 1873. We have heretofore described the line of this road, and the observations of yesterday contirmed what has been stated as to the character and expense of the work. In its path from the Point of Rocks to Washington it crosses water courses and ridges, instead of following valleys as most railroads do, and the consequence is that rather heavy cuts and fills are required in succession for most of the route. Of this work the bridges at Rock creek and the Monocacy, and thecut at Parr’s ridge is the heaviest. When that about the Monocacy is completed, which is now prom- ived by the first of December, in season for the opening of Congress, the through line from Pittsburg to Washington ria Connellsville will be put in operation, and we shall at last, after eight years of waiting, get whatever benefits may result from shortening our connections west forty-eight miles, and from bringing a pretty large tract of fertile country in direct communication with Washington. ‘The country traversed yesterday impressed evey one as being much finer, both in soil and picturesque featares, than that upon any other road leaving Washington, within the same radius from the city. The ground is rolling and elevated, affording a continuous succession of fine sites tor villas and cottages, and should the railroad company afford proper facilities for way travel it ts pretty certain that that district will in a few years be fully occupied by country residences. The road, so far as we went, appears to be constructed solidly, and for a new road the running is very smooth. The poorest portion is that within the city limits, but this is because the rail of the old construction road has not yet been replaced by new, as will soon be the case. Mr. Garrett has very wisely determined to bal- fast the road throughout with broken stone instead of gravel, and an excellent material has been supplied to his hand by a quarry struck | upon the hne of the road not far from Rock creek. The same quarry also supplies aband- ance of good stone tor abutments, culverts, &<c., so that it is quite certain the Metropolitan road will, though tediously slow in building, be safely solid when done. ‘The excursionists were favored with the com- pany of two gentiemen particularly well quali. fied to speak of the country passed through—the venerable Francis P. Biair, and Joseph H. Bradley, senior, and not the least interesting feature of the trip was their reminiscences, jocal and national. We suspect that Silver Spring is the real fountain of perpetual youth sought for by the explorer, Ponce de Leon. Here was Mr. Blair act 82, looking not # whit oldg than he did twenty-five years ago; and Mr. Bradley, his neighbor farmer, has the same nobility of port, fire of eye, and force and grace of expression as when at the head of the Wash- ington bar years ago, betore his handsome sons, worthy chips of the old block, had risen to | man’s estate to take his place. At Kockville there was some apropos speech- making by Messrs. Bradley, Blair, Stewart, Koontz, Florence, Arthur Shepherd, Pretty man, and others, in which the mutual wish of city and country te know each better by means of the Metropolitan road was happily expressed; od then the train was headed for Washington, returning in 45 minutes running time, which whieh was very well for fifteen miles over a new road. sees. — ‘Whether or not the District authorities took just the proper course to effect the removal of the Northern market sheds is a matter for dis- cussion, but there can be no question as to the dastardly character of the efforts of the Patriot to incite deeds of violence in response to that action. Itis quite in keeping with the thorough contempt that paper and its managers, indi- vidually and collectively, have always expressed for “the people”—or “‘the rabble,” as they pri- vately phrase it, that they should so underrate the charactér and intelligence of our citizens ‘'&s to suppose they could be influenced by such appeals. “The people,” as the money-bags managership of the Patriot contemptuously calls them, know very well that that paper ouly seeks to use them as cats-paws to pull its own chestnuts froz from the ire. soo- ——_____ Mr. L. Q. Washington, who was sent down to Maine by the Chicago Tribune to report the progress of the ground-swell for Greeley there, is very much disgusted with the people of the Dirigo State. The Grant “Tanners” are ‘‘fel- jows;” the Grant audiences are no more {fit to have the ballot than “the negroes;” “the ad- ministration press of Maine is lower, if possible, than thelr stump speeches;” and “the Grant campaign in Maine is based entirely upon the assumption of the ignorance of the people.” It eae Len | se INTH DistRIcr at oe cy | September 7th.
