EVE for Cleansing Bilk Goods. When silk eushions, or silk coverings of tarni- ture, becomes dingy, rub dry branon them gent- ‘with a woolen cloth tillclean. Remove the p Boe spots and stains. Silk garments should bare the spots extracted before being washed. Use bard soap for all colors but yellow, for which soft soap is the best. Put the soap into ot water, beat it till itis perfectly disolved. then adit sufficient cold water to make it just ukewar! Put m the silks and rab them in it till clean, take them out without wringing, and ringe them in fair lukewarm water. Rinse in an- other water; and for bright yellows, crimsons and maroons, add sulphuric acid enough to the water to give it an acid taste before rinsing the garment init. Torestore the colors of the differ- ent shades of pink, put in the second rinsing water a little vinegar or lemon juice; for scar— let, nse a solution of tin; for blue, purples, and other shades, use pearl ash; and for olive greens, dissolve verdigris in the rinsing water; fawns 1 browns should be rinsed Im pure water. p the silks up and down in the rinsing water; take them out of it without wringingand dry them in theshade. They look better not to be rinsedin clear water. but they should be rinsed in two ditterent waters. No person should ever crash & piece of silk when it is wet, because the = made will remain forever, if the kand hard. Cursxse Converts mm Cativornta.—John Chinaman has occasioned some curious religi- cous complications in San Francisco. Some members of the Third Congregational Church bad formed a class of intelligent Chinese, taught them the rudiments of the English age, snd also instracted them in matters of religion, and after awhile the leaders of the movement thought their puplis sufficiently advanced to be Tmitted to worship in the church every Sun- y. This was bitterly opposed by some of the congregation, and when a vote was taken there were fifty-two in favor and eighteen inst admission. The majority made things so lively that the admission of the Chinese converts was postponed six months, and in the meantime the pastor, having got mixed up tm the dispute, was compelied to —— The opposing factions are now left to fight it out among themselves, while the poor converts, who had'been tempor- arily abandoned by both sides, are leftexposed to the enemy of souls.
