EVENING STAR. CROSBY 8. NOYES......Editor. Largest Circulation in the District _ Beading Matter on Every Page. == WASHINGTON CITY: ZT ESDAY. September 3, 1872. The Star By Mail. Persons leaving the city for the summer, or any portion of it, can have Taz Star mailed to their addrees for such time as they desire, at the rate of fifty cents per month. Orders, accom- psnied by the money, should be sent to the busi- Bees office of the paper. - 22+ — We have read the full text of Mr. Doolittle’s letter, in which be undertakes to explain away the Connatty-cotton-permit charges, and in the light of the most favorable view that can be taken of the case, we feel bound to say that the ex: Senator fails to relieve himself from a most discreditable predicament. Many of Mr. Con- natty's statements he denies fatty. With these points we have no concern. The two gentle- men interested can settle the question of ve- Tacity between themseives. Unfortunately for Mr. Do le, he is obli to admit the gen- uineness of the letters printed by Connatty; bat he avers most stoutly that he did not sell his intiuence,—that he really did nothing at all to- ward securing the permit,—that the interest he Was to have in the venture was a purely private Inatter, with which the public had and bas no concern. Admitting all this, it cannot be honestly claimed by any reasonable person that Mr. Doolittle betters his case any. On what ground did he ask for or accept an interest in Mr. Con- natty’s business? If it was wrong in him to dee mand or receive pay for his influence with the government,—and he himself admits that it would be,—it is certainly as bad and even worse to become a partner in the proiits of a business venture without paying something therefor or rendering or doing something as an equivalent? Either horn of the dilemma will be found an uncomfortable resting place for a volunteer champion of purity and integrity in official and private life; and, on the whole, we think Mr. will do well to keep off the stamp for the remainder of the campaign. His record is not such as to give weight to his teachings. The Verment state election takes place to-day, and though the campaign has not beemso closely feught there as in Maine, there is yet no little interest to see the exhibit of strength made by the two parties as an indication of the percent- ege that the liberal party is likely to draw from the republican vote. It of course is not to be expected that the republicans will carry either Vermont, or Maine by majorities up to the flood tide of 1°60, 4, and However weak the liberal republican split-off may be, it still must amount to something; enough combined with the democratic vote to make some deduction from the great majorities when the party was united. Should, however, the republican ma- jority im Vermont fall below 10,000 it would indicate a degree of strength on the part of the coalition that would greatly revive the sinking hopes of the latter. The Greeley republican vote in that state is variously tstimated at from 2.590 to 5,000. Al- lowing tnat as their vote for this year and adding to it 15,000, the outside number of the democratic vote, 20,000 is ali that is shown. This is from 3,000 to 5,000 more than it is believed they can poll. In the same year, 1°68, Grant received here about +4,000 votes. If he or the state ticket should receive this year only 4),000 votes he would show a majority of from 29,000 to 22,000, while if he receives as large a vote as then his majority will be about 25,000. The total vote ia 1865 was a little over 56,000, New Hampshire, with a smaller population, generally casts 10,000 toh. more votes than this. If a fall vote is reached here at the election, it cannot fall short of 70,000, and the fuller the vote the higher will be the republican majority. There are, how- ever, some local dissensions amongst the repub- licans in some of the counties that may help the democrats to a few members of the legislatare, and perhaps to @ representative or two in the state senate. ‘Those who supposed that because the editor of the Philadelphia Press had gone on a tour to California the fight against Senator Cameron and General Hartranit, the republican nominee for Governor, would cease, are very much mis- taken, as a glance at its columns almost any day will show. The assaults of the Press are as fre- quent and bitter as ever, but for all this there is reason to believe that the opposition to the head of the ticket is falling off very rapidly throughout the state, and many persons compe- tent to judge do not hesitate to express the opinion, and to back it also with something sub- stantial, that the whole republican state ticket will be triumphantly elected in October. The Philadelphia Star, which ts a pretty close observer of public sentiment, and not a partisan gi say “~ Gen. Hartranft’s re: le ier Cells sm hie favor; the ght agaitat hits ta ‘his own party is dwindling as election day ap- Ss and there will not be such a heavy ‘alling off as was anticipated.” +2ee- Undue importance bas probably been given to the supposed fact that A. T. Stewart, the mer- chant prince of New York, par ezceilence, had contributed $20,000 for the Greeley fund, and was therefore a “liberal” in more than one sense. We now have it in our power to deny in toto this statement, and to say that Mr. Stewart's sympathies are with his interests, which, as with the other business men of the country, hie in the re-election of Gen. Grant. Generally speaking, we do not think people care much how the men of money go; but then, again, there are a certain class who look up to these political barometers with a feeling akin to veneration, aud regulate their course accord- ingly. To these this information will be of Value; at any rate it is a sign of the times. ——__+ -+e2- The political events of to-day are the state election in Vermont, the election of a delegate to Congress from Wyoming territory, and the assembling of the national straight-out demo. cratic convention at Louisville, Ky. To-mor. row, six state conventions will be held, namely: ‘The Missouri republican at St. Louis, Tennessee republican at Nashville, Topeka, New York democratic and liberal— ‘hat Syracuse, Arkansas democratic at Little k, and Minnesota democratic and lidberal— beth at St. Paul. +202. The Patriot quite naturally comes tothe de- fence of the street railroad company in its de- fiance of the public convenience inthe matter Of paving its tracks. Of course if there is a purse-proad or offensive monopoly of « sort to be bolstered up—the Baltimore and hiorail- | road—the Washington and Georgetown railroad or any other oppressive tyrampy—the Patriot is the paper to do it. -s0e- We are gia glad to see by the New Yor York World ‘hat the health of Mr. Manton Marble, its editor and proprietor, is so much improved that he expects to resume his full duties upon bis return to New York. Mr. Marble has proved himself of such brilliant capacity asa journalist, while yet a young man, that it would have been a matter of serious regret had he broken down in health at this early period of his career. The convictien that there has been a great reaction against Greeley has at last reached his political friends. The New York Sum docsn’t exactly admit in terms, but says: “// there has been, Augustus Schell and the democratic na- Sonal committee are responsible for it.” This is sad. ———___ -+ee- —_____ Now look out tor jokes about members of the Dent family making dents on people's heads. ea ss ng hg Bere or —— ‘The Vir ia Pree Press, at 3 ne the state election on or the naif Tees last in that county as follows: Werteeuer ee con- stitution, 1,404; against, <4,—majority, mY Governor: Camden, democratic nominee, 1.504.
