WASHINGTON CITY: TUESDAY........ 0.0... August 15, 1872. The Star By Mail Persons leaving the city for the summer, or &ny portion of it, can have Taz STaR mailed to their address for such time as they desire, at the rate of fifty cent per month. Orders, accom- Fanied by the money, should be sent to the busi- ness office of the paper. ‘The power of the Crispins to rule the shoe Dusiness in Lynn, Mass., is likely now to be put to a severe test. As stated in a telegram to Sat- ys STAR, fifty of the leading shoe manu- facturersof thatcity, representing seven-eighths of the c: 1, have signed @ paper, agreving not to employ a member of the Crispin order in any work or part of the work connected with the manufacture of sx This action iocks out about 1,000 men. The strike commen some two weeks ago. If the remaining 130 shops should join the other fifty firms over 2,500 ade ditional men will be thrown out of employment. ‘These men have been making from $25 to £40 per week, and some few edge trimmers have been earning $7 per day. The pittance of 36 per week to cach striker from the societies will Bot support such families as have to rely apon it entirely, for prices of living generally are about as high in New England as here, and the price of meats fifty per cent. higher. ‘Two years ago the shoe manufacturers of Lynn first recognized the existence of s Crispin or- ganization, and conferred with that body by Sending five of their number to meet five of the Crispims and arrange prices for the ensuing year. A list of prices was fixed upon, which was held as binding upon both parties, and at the end of the year the manufacturers expressed themselves as satistied, and the same list was re- adopted by the Crispins and again accepted by the manufacturers, and thus another year passed amicably away. This meeting of employers and employes on equal terms, and agreeing upon Prices by representatives of each party, was a Wise, eazy and equitable way of settling all diffi- culties, which it was hoped would be a prece- dent for the future. The Crispins met in mass- meeting last month and again adopted the old list of prices; but the manufacturers refased to let them fix the rates, claiming that the Cris- pins had not controlled their own organization, some of their number working at prices below the established rates. The result was the strike now in progress. Already some of the mannfac- turers are sending off their work to the interior towns in Maine and elsewhere, where the Cris Pins do not control the workmen. The strikers have a million anda half in the Lynn sayings banks, the use of which enures Principally to the manufacturers. This they Propose to withdraw by way of retaliation for the combinations against them. With a million and abalf c aaltal the Crispins might co-operate and leave the bosses ont in the cold, but then there is the danger that the banks could not stand the sudden pressure, in which event the working people would be the sufferers and not their employers. ~2e-- Proper respect for the business qualities of the ans who have sold out the dem- | ocratic vote to Greeley would ensure the belief | that they Lad bargained definitely for the con- sideration to be revived as an equi¢alent for that support. The charge that this bargain had been consummated has been made and not de- nied, or denied in an evasive way, equivalent to | an admission. Breckinridge said at the same meeting «Our part ot this bargain is to give the lib- eral rey ans our votes, in order to enable them to sueceed in the undertaking. Their part of the bargain is to restore to power the now cistranchised sons of the south, to drive out of the temple these vandals and ‘thieves, and to restore you, democrats, to their positions.” The clame in the new postal law which allows the trauspertation in the mails of smal! pack- ages ata tritling cost is one of the dest things placed on our statute books for a loxg time. Not only does it make the poorer classes independent of the express companies, and enable them to send and receive small articles at a low rater but it bas forced the express companies to lower their tariff of charges on small parcels of all kind, so that the whoie country, and especially the middie class, is very largely benefitted, both directly and indirectly. It now only remains for government to take some steps which will compel that most grasping and soulless of al! monopolies—the telegraph service—te reduce its | < charges to secure the thanks of a | long suffering people.
