EVENING STAR. NOYES......Editor. CROSBY Largest Circulation in the District Beading Matter on Every Page. ‘The election of & Mormon in Utah is now claimed as a Greeley victory. This is the way the Louisville Courier-Journal puts it: “The ogi epidemic is prevailing in Utah also. Cannon, liberal candidate tor Delegate { in Congress, was elected over Max- well, Grant nominee, by an overwhelming ma- jority, on the Sth. The Greeley ground-swell is felt everywaere.” Nothing like eating yo Lacs Lents eh: eerfully. WASHINGTON CITY: FRIDAY .00...--00 The Star By Persons leaving the city for the summer, or Any portion of it, can have Tae STaR mailed to their address for such time as they desire, at the Fate of fifty cent, ger month. Orders, accom- panied by the money, should be sent to the busi- nese office of the paper. be The distinguished speakers announced for the grand Greeley ratification meeting last night were :—“‘Governor Walker, of Virginia; Hon. dames K. Doolittle; Senator Fenton, of New York; Governor Wiyte, of Maryland; Senator Schurz; Hon. D. W. Voorhees; Hon. John Coch- rane, New York; Hon. S. S. Cox, New York; Hon. R. B. Roosevelt, New York; Senator Thur- man, Ohio; Senator Trumbull, flinoix; Hom. John M. Crebs, I linois; Hon. Alex. MeClare, Pennsylvania; Hon. George W. Julian, Indiana; Robert Ould, Richmond, Virginia; Hon. Thomss Swann, Maryland.” As a matter of fact, not a single one of the speakers announced were Present. and the meeting was addressed instead by Messrs. Jesse B. Wilson, John E. Norris, Dr. Charles Allen, R. M. Hall, R. W. Fenwick, BR. S. Davis, and others of our local politicians ‘This serves to show the humbuggery of the modern appliances for getting up “ratification meetings,” and we may add that both and ail parties are alike guilty in the matter. The result is that the sensible solid class of the com- munity, who dislike to be brought out under false Pretences, stay at home, and the audiences are made up of boys and those who are attracted by the fire- works ang Chinese lanterns. We mean no discredit to our local orators who spoke jast night when we say this. They are estimable citizens, and several of them are very good speakers, well capable of interesting an audi- ence, but the public desire fair dealing in the matter and want to know just who they may expect to hear when they take the trouble to attend. Henry Bergh, the president of the New York society for the prevention of cruelty to animals, is to be brought before the courts for obstructing travel by stopping street cars to make arrests. One of the police commissioners, in referring to the matter, said that, while he gave Mr. Bergh great credit for what he has done in behalf of demb animals, he could not help saying that Mr. B. appeared to think that a human being bad no rights which he was bound to respect. He alluded go one of Bergh’s arrests a few days previous, and said it necessitated the stoppage of | ment, is apt to prove delinquent. Ex-Attorney General J Black has declared for Greeley. By the way, Jeremiah’ opinion of Greeley, and likewise Greeley opinion of Jeremiah, would be « mighty inter- esting reading” this bot weather. sett The placidity of face of those who die of gan- shot wounds bas been noted as a carious fact, but the ghiastly contortions of the Patriot physi. ognomy under the bomb-shell explosion seems to controvert its truth. But perhaps it is dif- ferent with bombs. <ee-—____ ‘The Patriot boasts a splendid victory in North Caroline, and then goes on to give twenty-seven reasons why they were defeated. One is enough : the lack of votes. As the old sport said about his beaten horse: the distance was too great for the time. sso it is @ curious fact that, according to the Semi-Reb and Demi-Rep papers, all “our col- ored fellow-citizens” are for Greeley, and all “the brutal, ignorant niggers” for Grant. To these editors it makes a vast difference how the biack man votes. +2e0-- “ on. Suppose they should get 10 ether to-night on Mansfield mountain, and lp each other in a square talk to realize the po arin of it all, and make a contract to go back, each one to his own legitimate sphere— the President to Washington and the beautifal summer home in its environs that contented and tested Mr. LinceIn, and Mr. Greeley to his old daily work on the Tritwne and his Saturday rest at Chappaqua. The Philadelphia Ps ‘ress, the edhtor Cf which, Col. This is well. They are an exceedingly dangerous article to fool with, being apt to go off prematurely. ——_ ee ‘The democrats seem to have elected Ma- ginnis in Montana pretty much as they did Mer- rimom in North Carolina,—before the votes were counted.
