The Boston Traveller can't learn of a single active prominent republican in Gen. rict who follows ings lately.—Cin. 6 Frederick Douglass, in an exceedingly able letter in his paper, the National Era, of this week, headed “*U. S. Grant and the Colored People, ” says, in refereuce§to Mr. Summer's allegation that President Grant is not a sincere Triend of the colored race “* While I weuld not for a moment imply that I have Jost faith in the honored Senator's sincerity and integrity, still L most declare that President Grant’s course, from the time he drew the sword in defense of the old Union in the valley of the Mississippi till he sheathed it at Appomattox, and thence to this day in his reconstruction policy and his wer upon the kuklux, is without a deed or word to Justify such an accesation.”” cokabia “ Demi-reps” is the name su; for the liberal demectasic coves tive organiza- tion by the Mount Pleasant (Iowa) Journal. ‘The Boston Journal says that Greciey speakers were scarce in Brattleboro’, Vt. There was a tlag-raising there Saturday night, and a demo- crat at Greenfield, Mass., was written to during the day to send up.a speaker. He replied that no one could go at so short anotice. A dispatch then came, “Send us Hopkins.” “Can't,” the Greeley men answered, ‘the colonel is for Grant.” The Louisville Courier-Journal says to Mr. Sumner in reference to his late letter to Speaker Blane: “For the first time in forty years, Charles, your head begins to assume a marked degree of levelness. Vell done, noble North Carolina! You have announced in advance the verdict of a nation. N.Y. Tribune, Aug. 3, 1872. The next state election in order takes place in Ww Virginia on the 22d, it being the only one in August. The matter of most interest is the new constitution to be presented for ratification. ‘The contest for Governor is peculiarly warm. because Governor Jacob, the present incum- bent. is running independent against the regular democratic nominee. A correspondent who heard Colonel Mosby's epeech at Salem, Va., recently, says “he speaks as fiercely as be fights. Take him all in all, he isan ‘ugly customer’ to tackle, either in the field or on the rostrum.” In his forthcoming letter in reply to William Lloyd Garrison, Mr. Sumner, it is said, will enter at some length into a history of the anti- slavery movement, and attempt to disprove many of Garrison’s charges of his tardiness to enter the contest by elaborate quotations from his own speeches. The North Carolina victory was celebrated by the republicans at Atlanta, Georgia, last night. At Raleigh, N. C., there was also a grand dem- onstration, and Governor-elect, Caldwell, made an address. In New York, Philadelphia, and otber cities, the republicans celebrated the vic- tory by salutes, processions, &c. A call bas been issued for @ mass convention of the democrats of Michigan on the 2d of Sep- tember, to send delegates to the Louisville “straight out” convention. ‘The following Congressional nominations were - made yesterday: Loudon C. Of course nothing is known as to how it came there, but the suppo- sition is that it was secreted there by some con- federate prisoner during the war. It probably belonged to some southern ‘soldier, who con- cealed it for safety, and afterward died in the prison. ‘The workmen are said to have been very enthusiastic in their digging after that, and every log they rolled over they expected t> find hidden treasures, but it is not often that lighting strikes the samé spot twice.
