Your frm, F. A. Bosw: ote the people for the highe He bad paid for bis band a and his torches and hi war love! 3 fairly of in their 4 his proces- ves to a person whe ¥ examined the letters, turned them up wn and upside up, could make nothing of the markabie scrawls, and was obliged to get help u deciphering them. There was some mis- saced confidence, hereabouts; the letters came cot, and they hurt Boswell outside of Marder ‘ay. The better class of the community, white and colored, thought Fred. couldn't spell well enough to be mayor of Washington; aud some old-fasbioned people, too, professed te be shocked at the naked demagogism of the iransaction. but they were very old-fashioned people, indeed; and it should be said in behalf of Boswell that he paid for his ovation out of his own pocket. Ordway, too, to give the Si-ox his due, paid for his votes in the convention (at $2 apiece) on the nail, it iseaid; and also stood a wine luncheon just prior to the opening of the convention. Le Barnes, too- '* not behind in t spell at a Paying tor bis 5" ches at 5 each,—those yo Genouncing the Board of Public = %"'_« im good round terms and declaring that ‘the Murder Bayans never, never, never will be tlaves;—those speeches published in fallin the Potrict snd Chronicte as “delivered by the Hon. J. W. Le Barnes.” Equally liberal has Le Barnes been in his attempt to sup- plant Boswell in his own peculiar field of demagogism. Boswell attends the col- ered jrayer-mectings with edifying de- voutucrs, and is om band at colored bails with «ual assiduity. Le Barnes not only at- tend: (he ballsand prayer meetings, but sees to make Limself.conspicuous by appearing in public with colored women. Not long ago he took two negro women to the theater, and it is reported that he made himself the observed of al! observers the other day by kissing @ tender good-bye to a negro woman he had escorted to the cars. It is not easy to see how Bos- | po | the can surpass th he may content self with the knowledge that the colored people themselves are disgusted by Le Barn: pitiful attempt to curry favor with them by stebbering over their women. ‘They especially resent the presumption of an insignificant white mau like Le Barnes in supposing that his atten- tions will be considered an honor as from one superior to the men of their own color. And now it appears that Sayles J. Bowen is kering for the Murder Bay nomination for gress. This will give new lite to the motions wriggling coil. Sayles d. can beat Bos. well, Ordway and Le Barnes out and ont in slobbering demagogism in that locality. Buthe, a too, bas overdone the thing and made himselt repulsive to the better class of the colored peo- pl hown by their repudiation of him in 1870. Itis to be wished that he woul trickery could be exp The simple facts in the b © matter are that Bowen bar- ined with Gen. Grant for its purchase, and pard $1,000 down to bind the purchase. After- wards the gentlemen concerned in the purchase of a house to present to Gen. Sherman, pitched upon this house as the one they particularly wanted, and it was purchased of Gen. Grant, Bowen taking his $1,000 back, and Mr. and Mre. Bowen loth singing of release. This 1s all there is about it. Doubtless Bowen hoped by giving up his purchase to get a good thing im the way of office, and if the President had given him any one of the different positions | he has so persistently sought we should have heard no more of the house business. It is to the credit of the President that he gave him no | office. — Dror, Inzas or Ore G Covstrs.—dustin MeCarthy, from London tothe Er Mail, says itis an article of faith among Londoners that Horace Greeley is a sort of rough and roystering luna- tic, who was nominated fur the clear fun and broad jest ct the thing by a nation of practical jokers.
