Orders, accom- panied by the money, should be sent to the busi- ness office of the paper. — Senator Conkling delivered his first speech of the campaign at a large and enthusiastic Grant and Wilson meeting at the Cooper Institute, New York, last evening. He began by saying that no political canvass had ever been 20 fall Of foul piay, injustice, and malice; and that none had ever before appealed so strongly to his sense of fair play. Many honest men, he said, have been led away by this “liberal” ery, but they are deceived by the cleud of calumny Which darkens the sky. The men who set aileat these calumnies are distempered with gtiets, or else the sordid and the vile who fol- low polities as the shark follows the ship. The President, bis family, and all nearly associated With him bave been bespattered, and truth and decency have been driven far away. Every thiet and cormorant who has been pat out, every baitied mouser for peace or plunder, every man with a grievance ora grudge, all who have something to make by a change seem to wage an unbridied tongue or todrive a foul pen. He spoke of the Cincinnati convention as made upof a few respectable men who have since repudiated it, and ot the most piebald, disreputable collection to be seraped from the gutters and sewers of politics. He characterized the tariff resolution of the convention a shallow evasion, the amnesty plank needless, because the general amnesty bill bad already paseed Congress, and the civil service reform resola- tion wholly unnecessary, because Gen. Grant had jong before commenced the work of reform. In reference to the charge of gift-taking brought against the President the Senator said it Was not wrong for Grant, as a general, to accept munificent offerings from the aftiuent, whose fortunes he had saved, and in giving which they but followed the customs of ancient and mod- ern times. Wellington, Cromwell, Fairfax, Cobden, Bright, McClelian, Sherman, Sheri- dan and Farragut were similar recipients. The charge that it was wrong is an insult to the na- tion who witnessed and applauded the proceed- ings. The charge that Gen. Grant accepted gifts after he was nominated or since his elec- tion, the Senstor denounced a» wholly false, He denied that the President has grown rich in office, and gave an exhibit of the moderate Smount of property held by him, showing that the little he has came to him from the gratitade of the nation at the termination of the war, be- fore he entered office. The Senator defended the action of the President in the St. Domingo matter, and claimed that he acted the part of an honest man, walking in the path of the con- stitution and his predecessors. After consider- ing and dixposing of other charges made against the Fresicent, the Senator entered intoa caustic review of Mr. Greeley’s political record, and concluded by expressing the opinion that one who had been so variable could not be trusted to run a cider mill. oe The nternational prison congress, composed of delegates from all the leading nations of Europ and America, has just closed its labors tation to remedy the infamous “rotten borough” syste , but as bad as it is there, it is worse in W 5 FOR RENT AN D SALE. | FOR SALE: aoa 5 eye ne Fr Teom bri SE, oh o'r j ireland. A large majority of the delegates were deeply im- pressed with the importance of tempering jus- tice with merey, and the wisdom of teaching Prisoners some usetul trade, so that they can gain an honest livelihood after they are set at liberty. The Home Secretary of Great Britain, who.was present. attributed the decrease of crifgé in his country to the influence of indus- triaf schools and reformatories in cutting off the supply of criminals; to the philanthropic labors Of discharged prisoners’ aid societies, and to the general diffusion of knowledge. The question Whether prison labor should be merely penal or industria! was under discassion during the ses- sion, and the general judgment of the congress Was against the treadmill, and in favor of in- Gustrial labor for prisoners. <———$—_____ ‘The inducement of $100,000 offered by the New ‘k legislature to the person who shall Ciscover the best means of applying steam to canal navigation, has brought out quite a num- ber of competitors, and there is reasonable ground to hope that the time is rapidly approach- ing when steam will wholly supersede herse power. Besides the competitors who apply steam Girectly to the propuision of the boats, others are trying for the prize who propose steam tow- age. An interesting trial of + William's Canal Road Steamer” recently took place near Albany, New York; inthe presence of three commission- ers of the New York board of public works, and seems to have been quite satisfactory. The steamer, which ran on the tow-path, drew three boats with the greatest ease at the rate of three and a-half miles an hour. By careful com- fate it is estimated that the expénse of tow- age by this steamer would be much less than by horse power, and that by the use of steam a Saving of nearly fifty per cent. in time would be accom plished. oe A special correspondent of | the Baltimore American writes from North Carolina to the €ficet that the disturbance which occurred at Raleigh bad not the least resemblance to a ku- kiux oatrage. Two colored men who acted as marshals in the Greeley procession were hooted & party of rude colored people, and one of them was threatened with an attack, but neither of them washurt. The story about the whip- ping of Cross, “the Greeley marshal,” and his being found in the woods in a disabled condi- tion, was a pure fiction, says the correspondent invented by the Greeley men for political effect. ‘The dispatches about the United States com- missioner “trying” and “convicting” the offend. €re are incorrect, because that officer cannot try and convict persons accused of crimes; he in- quires into the charges, and if there appears to be & prime facie case against the parties he can only hold them to bail for their appearance be- fore the United States court. Mr. Draper, director of the Central Park Meteorological Observatory, in New York, bas boldly attacked @ popular theory. Mr. Draper asserts that the clearing of land docs not dimin- ish the volume of rain-fall, an: claims that eutu is the teaching of observations aud inves- tigations made by himself and by other weather students im New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Charleston, Great Britain, and parts of the con- Uinent. He finds that no change in the climate ofthe Atlantic states bas occurred within s centory, and that surface changes through ag- riculture, drainage, Xc., produce no apprecia- bie meteorological effect. All fears of drought from Mr. Greeley's attacks on the groves of “Chappaqua, fair Chappaqua,” are now set at rest, and the philesopher can continue his Sat- urcay hackings with an easy conscience. 5 ——__--.eee Ex-Collector Thomas Murphy, of New York as written a sharp letter in contradiction of statement recently made on the stamp by a Greeley speaker, in which he says, in reference to the President's cottage at Long Branch :— * Now, sir, this oft-repeated statement is wholly false. I did not give the President his house, ror contribute a cent toward its purchase; and, so far as I know and believe, he purchased it and paid for it with his own money.” . —— 2 Votes must be in the Keystone state At a trial now ‘wanes im Northambertand county, & school director testified that he re- ceived twelve dollars from a candidate aspiring to be county superiptendent of schools, to be Givided among directors in payment for their votes.
