If any Indian commits these crimes we give him better fare and more blankets. I think I may, with reason, say that under this policy the civilization of the wild red man will progress slowly.” It is General Augur’s opinion that the tribes in Texas need to be whipped into peacefulness. Diplomatic Pgrsonats.—The diplomatic corps are now pretty much scattered, the Span- ish and Prussian representatives and Sir Ed- ward Thornton being the only Ministers in town. The Honorabie F. J. Captain Cameron, R. -, the British commissioner for surveying’ the northwest boundary in conjunction with our commissioner, sailed out by the Parthia and is expected here the first of next week. INDIAN Orrosition To THE NORTHERN Pa- civic RaILRoaD.—Commissioner Walker, of the Indian Bureau, is in receipt of areport from Wm. H. Forbes, United States Indian agent, dated St. Paul, Minn., July 10th, of which the following is an extract: ‘1 apprehend no diffi- culty or direct opposition from the Indians on our reservations, Lac Traverse and Devil's Lake. Stitl lam satistied that the wandering hordes will gather and will prog 7 to prohibit therailroad from crossing the Missouri river, and a large military force should be kept con. stantly on the lookout. My estimate for what would appear to be a large amount of provisions for the use of the agency for this year is with a hope of drawing many of these hostile Indians to « peaceful lite on the reservations, where the first season they must be supplied with food, and until they can learn to raise a one. for themselves. An Indian, like a wolf, when hun- gry is ferocious, and now that the railroad is to pass daily through the last of the “range” of the buffalo, the dread of starvation has made them reckless. If they once could be made to understand that they would be taken care of until they bad learned to work for themselves, many among the hostile could yet be re- claimed.” ed. INTERESTING FIGURES OF THE NEw CEn- svs.—A table showing the area of the states and territories of the United States, and the number of families and dwellings, giving the totals by states has just been prepared at the Census Office. The total area of the United States and territories is given as 3,603,844 square miles, and of the states 1,984,467. The number of per- sons to the square mile is 1070-100; for the states — 19 21-100, Bo sy roi ad bear le count: 7,5 bs Persons to eacl Rani 59-100. In 1860 it was 5 28-100, and in 1850, 5 56-100. The number of dwellings for the wi country is 7,042, a to LINCOLN PARK, east of the Capitol, recently enclosed and lev eled, will be properly tile drained and suitabl gravel walks constructed, £5,000 having been appropriated for this park. CONNECTICUT AVENUE AND P-STREET CIRCLE is also to be improved immediately by the intro duction of water and gas therein, erection o lamp posts, &c.
