. . ———EEE——EE Se EVENING STAR. __ CROSBY 8. NOYES Largest Circulation in the District Reading Matter on Every Page. WASHINGTON CITY: MONDAY... July 8, 1872, -Editor. _ The Star By Mail. Persons leaving the city for the summer, or py portion of it, can have Tas Star mailed to their address for such time as they desire, at the Fate of fifty cents per month. Orders, accom- Panied by the money, should be sent to the busi- Bess office of ae paper. —— Sunstroke_so.called. ‘The telegrams in Tex STAR for the last week have shown an unparalleled number of cases of sunstroke in the principal cities of the country— or rather, curiously enough, in the northern cities. Dropping im to-day upon Dr. Toner, who bas made health and mortuary sta- tistics somewhat of a study, we found upon his desk a table he had prepared, showing from the census returns the mortality of the United States by sunstroke for 1870, with the sex and age of the victims. The census figures, though doubtless imperfect as to the number of deaths, serves to give the data for estimating the ratio for different parts of the country and the different ages and the sex of those effected. From this table and from the views and observa- tions of Dr. Toner on the general subject of sun- Stroke we gather the following particulars that will have an interest for the readers of Ta: SrTaR at this time. The whole number of deaths by sunstroke reported for 1370 by the census Was 307, and the percentage of males to females attacked was about 7 to 1; there being of this number 346 males and 51 females. Alabama had 5 cases; Arizona, none; Arkansas, 2; California, 3; Colorado, none; Connecticut, 4; Dakota, none; Delaware, District of Columbia, 3; Florida, (our most tropical state,) none; Georgia, 3; Idaho, none; Ili- neis, 42; Indiana, 7; Iowa, 7; Kansas, 3; Kentucky, 10; Louisiana, 11; Maine, 2; Maryland, 13; Massachusetts, 10; Michigan, 2; Minnesota, 1; Mississippi, 2; Missouri, 50; Mon- tana, none; Nebraska, none; Nevada, 2; New Hampshire, 1; New Jersey, 7; New Mexico, 1; New York, 51; North Carolina, 8; Ohio, 51; Ore- gon, none; Pennsylvania, 39; Rhode Island, 1; South Cerolina, 6; Tennessee, 7; Texas, east of the Colorado river, 5; west of the Colorado river, 1; Utah, 2; Vermont, 1; Virginis, 19; Washington (Territory), 1; West Virginia, 2; Wisconsin, 8; Wyoming, none. Of the total 30 there were 33 under five years of age. ‘The most fatal period seems to be from 30 to 40, there being 92 deaths between those years, and the number falling off beyond that Gecade rather more rapidly than its rise to that culminating point. The proportion of deaths of children under five years of age it will be seen, surprisingly large, and of these there were eleven deaths under one year of age; a warning to parents and nurses. itis a popular error that what is called sun- stroke is caused, only, by the direct rays of the sun. The medical term for the attack is ‘‘inso- jation,” meaning the action of extreme heat on the system, whether by the direct rays of the sun or otherwise. It is styled, alr>, “retained bea People employed in hot rooms—iaun- dries, sugar refineries, engine rooms, &c., are as liable to it as those exposed to the sun, and very many cases occur in the open a'r after sun- set. The victim suffers from sudden arrest of perspiration, and great heat of the skin. ‘The class of cases that never recover are those where the pupil of the eye is greatly contracted Among the first and most available remedies when a person is attacked is to lay him in a horizontal position, open or remove his clothing, and dash cold water on his face and breast. Dashing the water on is better than bathing the sufferer. To avert sunstroke, temperate habits ineating and drinking areof the first importance. White clothing is much better than black or Gark clothes, and if dark under clothing is worn, the exterior clothing should be white. In Indiathe percentage of deaths against dark clothes is very large; and there also it is usual t> wear a cap of white linen with a flap at the back to protect the back of the neck and the spinal cord, the part of the body particularly susceptible to the Faysot the sun. A moistened sponge or hand- kerchief is an excellent thing to wear in the hat to keep the top of the head cool. Zion's Hera d,ot Boston, advocates | the elec- tion of Gov. Claflin to the Senate, as the suc- cessor of Henry Wilson, when the latter is elected Vice President. Gov. Claflin is a Meth- and the Boston Congregationalist objects appropriation of offices by the Metho- dists, and thinks that some other man, belong- ing to some other persuasion, ean be found who will make as good a Senator. It is to be hoped the day will never come when government of- ficials will be chosen or rejected because they belong to, or do not belong to, some particular cburch. a Mr. James Kelly, of Wilkinsburg, Pa., has Riven $250,000 to the Allegheny County Agri- cultural Society for the purpose of tounding an institution in which poor boys may learn trades. Mr. Kelly is a very sensible man, and if other philanthropists will follow bis example and give their means for the establishment of technical Echoois, in which we are sadly deficient in this country, they will do more good than can prob- ably be done with the same amount of money in any other ¢ direction. ee -—___ On Saturday the French assembly, with but four dissenting votes, ratified the treaty recently concluded providing fer the evacuation of French territory by German troops. The coms mittee to whom the treaty was referred, in their report flatter the assembly for the efforts it has made to relieve the country from the presence of German troops, but studiously avoid giving any credit to Thiers. LORD KILGOBBIN. By Ctarles ienae New York: Bar; a ow {Through J.€. Parker end James ervend This hasa peculiar aia as the last novel written by Lever; and from the fact that in its dedication to the memory of his wife he spoke of bimself as in broken health and spirits from that loss, and expressed the hope that this effort might be his last. As in the case of Dickens, the later works of Lever lacked somewhat of the rollicking humor and vivacity of his early novels, such as “Charles O'Malley,” “ Harry Lorrequer,” &c.; but what was lost in this re- spect was gained in vigor and depth, and in these particulars “ Lord Kilgobbin” is up to his best mark. Benry L- Hinton. iThroueh B. Moban & Uo j Our readers will remember the interest excited by the scientific experiments in Psychic Force, conducted with the aid of certain mechanical tests by Mr. Crookes, F. R. S., in the presence of Dr. Huggins, F. R. S., and Dr. Cox. It has been claimed that these distinguished scientists were converted by the results of these experi- ments to the creed of spiritualism. The object of this pamphlet is to show that the very reverse was the fact. The experiments proved conclu- sively that the force supposed by many to be spiritual isin facta force proceeding from the human organism.
