July 5, 1872, The Star By Mail. Persons leaving the city for the summer, or any portion of it, can bave Taz Star mailed to their address for such time as they desire, at the rate of fifty cents per month. Orders, accom- panied by the money, should be sent to the busi- ess office of the paper. —+202-— The Glorious Fourth passed off quietly in this city—that 1s with the exception of the fire- cracker nuisance in rather an aggravated form. The juveniles either didn’: know that Major Richards had forbid the use of ganpowder in this shape, or thought he didn’t mean it; and the popping of these combustibles was fast and ftur‘cus for the twenty-four hours of “Independ- ence day." Luckily no conflagrations followed, though the roof of a frame house in South Wash- ington took fire from a cracker thrown upon it and was extinguished with some difficulty. The celebrants of the day in the city were mostly colored people, who bad a Sunday-school de- monstration and various paraies by society or- ganizations. The white folks who celebrated did so by excarsions into the country, down the river, &c. Very good order was maintained at the day, and business was generally —————_-<ee--___ ‘The English lock-out contest in the building trade between the masters and men is still main- tained with uncertain results. A lock-out, like @ strike, can only be efficacious if it is general, and the masters do not seem to have taken the trouble to ascertain in advance whether the majority of small firms were in a position, or in & mood, to co-operate in such a measure. They had a notion, moreover, that the masons, plas- terers, &c., could be separated from the carpen- ters and joiners, but at this moment the union between all branches of the workmen seems perfect. It is so perfect that the concord be- tween the men is doing more to make the iock- out universal than agreement between the masters. Great contractors, who meant to goon with certain portions of contracts, find them- selves brought to a complete standstill. The great hope of the mastersin such circumstances is their want of hope. If they yield, it mast be ‘an unconditional surrender, and is sure to be followed by other demands against which they will have less means of standing out than they Bow have. The nine hours’ schedule will soon be followed by one of eight. But the current is allon the men’s side. At the time of the great Neweastle strike it was pointed out that the method then adopted, and the success gained by the men, must largely influence the relations of employer and employed all over England and in every branch of labor. In not a single contest | since then have the employers earried the day, and there is no reason to suppose the builders Will succeed where others have — emda It is the practise of bathers from our wharves to dive in quite shallow water; aud probably where the bottom issoft and the plunge ts not Perpendicular this can be done without injury but a recent occurrence in England shows that it is wise to take precautions in the matter. A man of forty-three years of went to bathe at one of the public London baths, and dived in head first atthe end where the water is only inches in depth, and on rising to the surtace his head and shoulders were ob- served to remain under water. One of his com- Psnions drew the attention of another to the strange appearance, and asked if their friend was acting; but on examipation it was foand i man was actually drowning. He was in- Royal Infirmary, where he immediately died, It was found that by striking his head against the bottom of the bath he bad fractured one of the bores of the spine, suff.cient to cause death. pa —— —— The d+mocracy seem to be caving in on all sides to Greeley. The most obstinate Bourbons were those of Georgia, headed by Stephens ands Toombs, but the Atlanta correspondent of the pati Commercial, who has given a pretty lively and impartial view of the situation there, writes now that the Georgia democracy will f..1 into line: “By November I doubt if there are five thou- fand in the state but will have come up to the feratch. Some will march upto the unsavory doze with somethin, urauit of @ peck of oats, while other. y the wayside, casting longing glancas tthe democratic go pastures they are leaving perhaps foreve: “Where dweil we now?” was the pathetic inquiry of the late R. Dhu (see “Lady of the Lake”) when reciting to the visiting Saxon the extent of the former dominions of the Gael. “Where dwell we now?” is the inquiry of the dwindled Democracy, and echo answers that she really can’t tell unless it be where the wood- bine twineth. ————_-«e--_,__ ‘The coming phamphiet, ta be issued, report Fays, next week, giving choice readings from all the hard things said by Greeley of the demo- rats for the last thirty years excites curiosity, but the old coons of the democracy hereabouts fy say they shall go for Greeley all the same. The: argue that it is about time to “capture him” And make him say sweeter things of them. From five to ten thousand persons a day are hbe}ped to health and cleanliness at the two pub- | lic baths in New York, and not a tenth are ac- commodated who seek to be. Our health officers Probably have not the money at command to build free baths here, but they might possibly wake some provision in the way of bathing places. ——_____-<ee- _____ The New York World is getting a little more Greeleyish, like our Patriot, day by day.
