EVENING STAR ee silting of: WANTS oe RENT AND SALE. CROSBY 8. NOYES...... Editor. Largest Circalation in the District Reading Matter on Every Page. WASHINGTON CITY: FIDAY.. <eceeee Same 28, 1872, The Star By Mall. Persons leaving the city for the summer, or any portion of it, can bave Taz Star mailed to their address for such time as they desire, at the rate of fifty cents per month. Orders, accom- panied by the money, *hould be sent to the busi- nese office of the paper. os Some of our exchanges show egregious gulli- bility by repeating a story fhat the New York | Tribune “is losing subscribers at such a rate that its suspension is threatened.” Greeley won't be President, but the Tribune will con- | tinue to be one of the half-dozen leading papers of the world as long as it is kept up to its present mark of readableness and newsiness. If these qualities are forthcoming in a newspaper, even the partisan reader will tolerate a pretty breezy independence of editorial opinion; and the average reader likes his paper all the better for a flavor of that sort. This is especially true of city readers. The Tribune may lose some of its weekly, country subscribers, but will probably gain as many as it loses. A great deal of sense is talked about the losses to egret 000 bewspapers on account of the bigotre that clase of subscribers. We ther duving the know-nothing furore, we ‘his paper took grecad sqainct Out ‘mporarily formidable party, it was currepys Teported that Tue Star 4 lost some s=Ousands of subscribers in a single week, a w 4s doomed to be wiped oat of existence By #¢ otgan of the K.N.'s started here. Tbe fc. was thatTue Star last about cixty bscribers, gained more than ten times | & seat number, and in less than 3 month had all | its disaffected subscribers back. The paper | started to thrust Tax Stax from the field died | t the end of the campaign. We suppose there is about as much foundation for the reports that the two Tritunes, (of New York and Chicago,) the Springfield Republican, and the Cincinnat! Commercial are just now losing a good many sibscribers, as there was in our case. aaa The distressing case of attempted suicide by an unfortunate couple, reported in Taz Star yesterday, serves to show what instances of ex- treme destitution may exist in a community quite unsuspected. In this case, the partics seem to have reached the stage of starvation through helpless ignorance of the modes of agp ee a HABD J ex EPUBLIC | ill begip to draw interest at | Columbia, held at | and will probably come to a speedy end if the employers have the good sense to accept the | _ ofarbitration proposed to settle difficalties between the workmen aud themselves. The | latter should be careful not to give any legiti- | mate cause to the workmpm to make a stand against them, and that course will undoubtedly | be afforded by the refusal to accept arbitration. — <3ek———— The New York Herald was for Grant yester- day. = TRE GRADUATES OF BiaN OOLLEGS LAW sre Feavested to meet at the Law Building on SAT- June 29, at Sorclock p= brner ak + Pros i* | ‘A FREE ORGSN CONCERT will be given atthe Foundry Mt, poarch reer 1th abd G streets. on RrURD June 29. 1572. fi 107 o'clock, Pron moat! Another feature of this sorrowfal affair causes surprise, and that isthe seeming ease with which the means of destroying life was obtained. It would seem that Iaudanam almost by the pound was obtained from an avenue | crugstore, and was used, in fact, in such qaan- tities as to defeat the purpose intended, by | causing vomiting.
