At last the trial of Stokes, charged with the murder of Fisk, has begun ia New York, and is progressing with more rapidity than was hoped for. ‘The first witness examined yesterday was John G. Hill, who testitied that he heard the shot fired, andsaw Fisk after he was wounded, he then heard some one eay, “ That is the man who shot him.” Witness recognized Stokes as the man so pointed oat. The second witness examined was Francis Curtiss, ot Boston, who testified to hearing pistol shots; went immediately to the head of the stairs; found Fisk on the stairs; heard Fisk ask, ‘* Will any one protect me trom this assas- sin?” Witness went to Fisk, asking, “1s this you, Colonel?” Fisk responded, “I am shot.” Witness helped him up stairs.
