EVENING STAR. CROSBY 8. NOYES......Editor. | Largest Circulation in the District Reading Matter on Every Page. = — WASHINGTON CITY: THUBSDAY ..............Jume 27. 1873, The Star By Mail. Persons leaving the city for the summer, or apy portion of it, can have Taz STAR mailed to their address for such time as they desire, at the mate of fifty cents per month. Orders, accom- panied by the money, should be sent to the busi- The Fall Elections, Previous to the great presidential contest in November, the following states and territories bold electiors this fall: North Carolina, August 1; Kentucky, Montana, and Utah, August 5; New Mexico, September 1; California, Septem- ber 2, Vermont, September 3; Maine, Septem- ber 9; Colorado territory, September 10; Dako- ta, Indiana, Iowa, Nebraska, Obio, Pennsylva- nia, and the District of Columbia, October 8, Sevth Carolina, October 16; West Virginia, Oc- tober 24. All the states yote for presidential electors on the 5th day of November, and on the same day the following choose state officers: Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Geor- gia, IMinois, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missis- sipp!, Missouri, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Tennessee, Virginia, and Wisconsin. Ari- gona holds her territorial election on the 8th of November. The first state election to take place this fall, it will be seen, is that in North Carolina, Au- gust Ist, and the campaign isan animated one. State officers and members of Congress are to be chosen. The republican candidate for Gov- ernor is Tod R. Caldwell, the democratic can- didate August S. Merriman. The congressional candidates in the several districts are as follows: Cc. L. Cobb, rep.; D. M. Carter, dem.; C. R. ‘Thomas, rep.; W. H. Kitchen, dem.; Neifl Mc- Kay, rep.; A. M. Waddell, dem.; W. A. Smith, rep.; Sion H. Rogers, dem.; Thomas Settle, rep.; James M. Leach, dem.; 0. H. Dockery, rep.; Thos. S. Ashe, dem-; W. M. Futches, rep.; W. M. Robbins, dem.; W. G. Candle, rep.; Z. P. Vance, dem. North Carolina last year gave 9,245 majority against a proposition to call a convention to revise the state constitation, which was & republican victory. Im 1871 it gave 4.221 democratic majority, and in 1368 for Grant 12, It is curious to note im the recent dispatches from London the evidence of the alarm of the English lest they may be overreacied by “the Yankees” at Geneva. They have become con- vinced that the American counsel at Geneva | are “very able men,” and at the same time they distrust the capacity of their own representa- tives, though one of them is Sir Roundei! Palmer, the undisputed head of the English “bar. Nor have Englishmen much confidence in | the arbitrators—that ‘s, the three neutral mem- bers of the tribunal. They seem to be divided in their apprehensiors that the treaty will be carried out, or that it will fail. In the first case they fear to be cheated, and in the second, they dread to have the unsettled claims hang- ing over their heads to be pressed at some inconvenient time. The troubles of our British cousins over the Privateer business will be apt to teach them a salutary lesson. They will not be likely here- | after to undertake to speculate upon our mis- fortunes, or to rush too speedily to the concia- sion that the American Union js going to smash because of a little domestic difficult: There is a great ileal of talk among snobbish and discontented Americans of the superior- | ity of certain British institutions over similar enes on this side of the Atlantic, and we often hear allusions to the independence of the Eng- lish pressand the subservieme of American journals. ea goo# many other statements which are accepted as true because people won’t take the trouble to inquire into their accuracy this one won't bear investigation. The fact is | American newspapers dare to, and often do, go directly against public sentiment, while Englis journals decline to print even bare statements of facts which may be distastetal to the princi- of their readers. Thus, in London, Unita- | proceedings are always ignored. Robert’ er, last year, and Athanese Coquerel, ihis year, failed to get a line of notice in any daily On Trinity Sunday, twelve Unitarian clergy- men attacked the Athanasian creed with might and mai. In any American city the combined assault would have attracted editorial comme at and the sermons would, probably, have been re ported at some length. In London not a word of comment or of report appeared. ——-+22-_____. ‘Ihe New York boardot police have granted the Orangemen permission to commemorate the bat- tle of the Boyne by the usual procession throagh he public streets on the 12th of July; and not only that, but have promised them an escort. It remains to be seen whether their protection will be sufficient, or if it will be requisite to call the military to the aid of the police, as was the case iast year. An effort is being made to settle the difficulties between the Orangemen and Roman Catholics. Several prominent leaders of the orange and the green held an informal cor'crence the otber evening, and both sides Were favorably impressed with @ project for a union of the two parties in the coming proces- sion. on condition that the objectionable insignis and tunes be dispensed with. It will be a long stride towards the millenium when this old and | bitter teud is settled. eee A morning cotemporary says that the com- lnints egainst the Board of Health for alleged neglect in removing the manure piles on the river front are gressly unjust, as they “have already been condemned and the health officer | instructed to require their removal.” Glad to | hear it; but we fail to see the “gross injustice.” More than a year ago the attention of Dr. Verdi was called in these columns to this nuisance, and it is little wonder that the complaints should begin to take a sharp turn by this time. ————__-~«e-- “Is Greeley an old fool?" This isthe ques- tion the San Francisco papers are discussing with heat. No, he is not an old fool, though his netion of running for the White House does give some color to that idea. Greeley isa well-meaning old gentleman, a good writer but father profane, an indifferent farmer, a tenth- Fate woodcutter, and about the most unprom- teiny subject for President that the world has ever seen. 4 Extra Bi ps bas relapsed.
