At the time thisarticle is written the Potomac water bas been cut off from the District cities about forty hours, and the small supply laid in by housekeepers bas been long since exhausted. This isa very serious busin and the results are extremely disastrous. was generally supposed that with everything in readinesss to manage- make the connections, and with ment, there would be a stoppage of the water supply for half a day, posibly for 24 how but nearly two davs have passed, and yet we have no water. The few pumps throughout the city are surrounded by crowds of men, women 2 children with buckets, pails, tubs and cups, and fights for precedence are not infrequent. ‘The wells are now failing, and the situation is becoming graver. Drivers of carts in some in- stances brought barrels to the pumps to lay in a supply forthe remainder of the day, and when this was the case, the small consumers insisted that they should be first supplied, and numerous altercations have ensuca, As may be supposed with such a of scarcity water, beer isin demand, and the resiavrants are doing a large business. employees im the currency bureau have been suspended, there being no water for the boilers, and several machine shops throughout the city have been forced to stop work. At the STAR office an old well was opened yesterday ere filled and oar extra, with ‘the news ef Grant's nomination, printed and served p.m., but the impure water which had to be forced into the boiler with pumps clogged the Pipes, and the press for the edition of the paper, with a full account of the nomination of Senator Wilson for vice presi- dent and the action of the Philadelphia conven- tion, could not be got to work until a late hour. Had the fire (noticed elsewhere in the the upper or central part of the ‘city it might bave been terribly destructive. How long this state of things is te continue we know not, but reports from Foundry branch represent that they expect to turn the water on to-night. A heavy responsibility attaches to someone for the delay in the work which has resulted so seriously to our citizens.
