WA HINGTON CITY: All the interest of the day centers at Phila- delpbia, andour fall and accurate dispatches from that city supply complete information as to what is going on there. The renomination of Grant was so much of a foregone conclusion that it Was supposed the convention would be rather a quiet, humdrum affair; but it has de- veloped into s demonstration of unmistakable enthusiasm, showing that the great popular heart is yet with Grant, and that the public re- gard for him has been quickened rather than depressed by the vindictive assaults upon him in the Senate and elsewhere. A lively element by iso, been introduced into the convention by the unexpected sharpness of the contest for the Vice Presidency. The fight fluctuates so from hour to hour that no definite opinion can be formed of the result until the balloting com- mences. It seems not unlikely that the close- bess of the contest between Colfax and Wilson (Senator) will compei a rally upon a third can- cidate. +202-- It is much to be regretted that any informal- ity should delay the construction of the Union street railroad connecting the northern portions of Washington and Georgetown, as the citizens en both sides of Rock creek are anxious for its speedy completion. If Congress now deems it Proper that the privilege accorded toother lines of running by the public squares should be de- nied this one, 80 be it. A modification of their charter, slightly changing the proposed roue, would in that case be necessary. Having ex. pended $60,000 already, they cannot afford to be captous, bat it is understood they claim that in justice they should not be compelled to sacrifice this heavy outlay under the charter accepted by them in good faith. This seems reasonable enough. The proposed extension of their road is demanded by a large number of people in both the District cities, and itis to be hoped that Congress will, before adjournment, adjust the matter equitably, so that the much-needed work may goon. Competition is for the public good, and the extension of street car lines in every direction is not only a great accommo- dation for the people, but helps build up the sections the roads pass through, and thus makes patronage for the competing lines. ———_—_-+02-—____ France may not be all our fancy painted her &s a republic pro tem.—her stringent press regu- Istions have rather the flavor of imperialism— bot the progress of the labor and temperance Teforms shows that she is making some headway, nevertheless. While a proposition for appoint- ment of a labor commission, which might throw some light upon the grave questions which are ‘now agitating the workingmen of this country and the capitalists who employ them, is coldly received in the American Congress, the French government, with less pressure, has recognized the necessity for such an inquiry, and appointed 2 committee, consisting of forty-five of the most | able and experienced political and social econ- | omists of France, to investigate the subject of labor and make a report. The commission will first take up the question of the regulation of the Inbor of women and children. A law on this | Subject prepared for the commission provides that children under ten years of age shall not be Permitted to work in manufactories and shops, | acd that children under fifteen shall not be employed at all in mines. It is also proposed to prohibit absolutely the employment of females in underground works. Two general inspectors and Sfteen division inspectors are to be ap- Pointed to look after the execution of the law. —__+«ee- ‘The adulteration of spirituous liquors, it would scem, is not contined to the United States, as bas been frequently charged, and drinkers of “ pure trish whisky” had better be certain what t is they purchase under that mame. According to revelations just made by the Dublin Evening +’, the crime of adulteration prevails to an rming extent in all part: of Ireland. Dr liodges, of Belfast, recently examined several ples of whisky, which he found adulterated h naphtha, cayenne pepper and vitriol. One sample, described as a fair specimen of the pk sold in low-class public houses, was com- “almost entirely of naphtha with a slight ng ot whisky. Bat even this was outdone he skill of an itinerant practitioner in rorthern county, whe by a scientific combina. tion of cayenne pepper, vitriol, spirits of wine, uestone, tramsmutes a gallon of water into m of whisky at the cost of one penny. Delirium tremens produced by drinking ordi- ary spirits is said to be jolly in comparison with the effects of indulging in the “hell- broth” above described, which is said to lead to Seedy paralysis or hopeless insanity. “ Pure Freuch brandy,” manufactured trom sawdust, is another invention of the enemy which comes fiom actoss seas. 6 ‘ew York polices just now making one Of their spasmodic but fatile efforts to break up Policy shops, through which a petty system of gambling is carried on and thousands of poor people who cannot afford to patronize heavy gaming establishments, are dally robbed of their earnings. Owing to corrupt inflaences «the New York police, it has never yet possible to entirely break up this odious m of gambling, and it is charged by New York journals that instead of honestly endeavor- Jug to suppress the evil, the members of the force consent to overlook the offence in all cases Where the policy men are willing to pay a hand- some sum to avoid exposure. Cincinnati also is out to inaugurate a war against the policy shops. We have a number of them in this city, which should be broken up at once. —<o- — You p your money and takes your ch over the telegrams from Mexico. Day betore yesterday we had a bateh stating that the gov- ernment troops had cleaned out Trevino and reoccupied Monterey. Yesterday, the accounts were directly the reverse—Trevino was the vic- tor, and bad scattered the government forces like chat? before the wind. To-day we have an- ver batch of telegrams from Matamoras, re- Seserting the utter defeat of Trevinoand the Occupation of Monterey by the Juarists, and claiming that Coretlo was not whipped—he merely marched off to join Caballas. Miss Tennie C. Ciatin’s military aspirations bave been nipped inthe bud by the ungallaot action of the gallant 9th New York regiment, the members of which organization apparently prefer brain to beauty in their commander, having promoted Lieut. Col. Charles R. Brain to the coloneley made vacant by the death of dames Fisk, ir. Claflin would have been a Worthy successor to Fisk in some respects, but she will have to content herself with the doubdt- ful honors of civil life a while longer, unless she accepts the command of the colored troops in dew York city, recently te tendered ed to hn her. At length it is understood that strength cannot be purged into # debilitated frame, though life may easily be purged out of ft, and that it is abont as wise to withhold a healthful! stimalant from the weak, in the expectation that they will rally without one, as it would be to deprive a lamp ofoil and expect it to burn the brighter fo1 pure stimuiant with the finest medicinal herbs, known as Mostetter’s Stomach Bitters, has largely assisted in dispelling the absurd chimera. Frantic attempts are made to revive it, but in vain. When the sick feel that their strength is departing, and that unlees invigorated they must utterly break down, it is in vain to tender them feculent slops in the place of genuine restoratives. They may be im- posed upon in this way once, but the imposition cannot be repeated. They desire to be refreshed, comforted, braced up,and declime to be griped a second time. Under ths operation of the Bitters, on the other hand, all the proc-sses necessary to physical resto- ration go on simultaneously.
