EVENING STAR. CROSBY 8S. NOYES. - Editor. Largest Circulation in the District | Reading Matter on Every Page. WASHINGTON CITY: DAY. soe Miny 27, LOTS. ‘The success of the carpenters, masons, paint- ers and other mechanics who “struck” for eght hours in New York, has emboldened other em- ployes to fellow their example, and at least 30,000 working people in that city, including furniture men, marble workers, pattern-makers, varnishers and polishers, ship-joimers, coach painters, wheelwrights, blacksmiths, etc., etc., are now organized to take part in the move. ment, and seme of them intend to strike to- day. The plumbers’ strike has just ended in victory for the workmen. The coffin-makers are now on & strike, and their motto is “eight hours or no funerals.” The weather is warm, and they are likely to get their demand before the newspapers can fire off their jokes on such & grave subject by remarks that this is running the strikes in the ground. The clerks employed in the business houses are making an effort to obtain a half holiday every Saturday afternoon at one o'clock, im accordance with the custom which is almost universal throughout England In London, Liverpool, Manchester, and all the large cities, no business is transacted on Satur- day afternoons, except by small retail stores, and the arrangement seems to work well both for employers and employes. The clerks in Phil- adelphia are about to make the same demanJ. ‘The custom has been started there, but has vot yet been generally adopted. The closely packed ‘eslamas of figares on the pages of the reports which are being issued from the census office from time to time, as u: Inviting as they look te “the general reader are full of suggestive and interesting matter, not only for political economists and scientists, for every one who has intelligence enough appreciate the importance of the facts which may be educed from these statistics, by analy. sis and comparison with previous reports. Some wonderful results are shown by comparison alone. In the year 1850 the national censas gave asthe entire products of manufactures, wining, and fisheries in the United States only 81,019,106,616. In 1870 the single state of Penn- sylvania produced in manufactures alone, ex- clusive of mines and fisheries, 725,590,424. If the aggregate ot the mining were included, the return would, no doubt, equal the whole pro- duet of the entire country in 1850. Such a growth in twenty yearsis amazing. Should the imereage in the current decade be in the same ratio as inthe last, the aggregate for Pennsyl- vania in 1580 will be nearly $2,000,000,000, or considerably more than the entire product ot the nation in 1560. We merely make these state- ments as illustrating the importance of the census reports. It would take a large volume to exhibit their bearing on matters affecting the health, the social condition, the political status, and material prosperity of the people. "see ‘The unexpected strike of the farm laborers in England, a class even lower in the social scale than our former slaves, and with less intelli- gence, has startled the conservatives of that country more than any event of the past filty se esees. A Woman arp Carin C In Dubuque, Iowa, the bi he Towa Clock Store fell, Saturday afternoon, with a terrific crash. The clerks had warning by the cracking and escaped. Two women who were seek in @ carriage were caught by and one woman and the gw lied. ‘The other woman had tesa broken. Loss on the building, $4,000. THE CENTENNIAL Commission has accepted badges woven of silk on the Jacquard loom, and pr ey ees to the people showing the purposes exhi- bition. So ter had it been at some shee years. That a class of people hitherto regarded | as of jnst about as much consequence in the political world as the horses or oxen employed | with them in their farm labor, should have the | audacity to talk of their rights was surprising; but not more astontshing than the fact that they stick to the new i and will not be threatened or coaxed out of it. The strike appears to have assumed a definite and formidable shape, and is constantly on the increase. The disaffection has now spread to Dorsetshire and others of the inland counties, and everywhere the cry is for an advanee of wages. That this cry 1s not an unreasonable one we think will be conceded by every one when informed that what these dis- satisfied tillers of the soil want, and seem de- termined to have, is the sum of about $: week! How is that for high ential damages by our government, after formally asserting it, will be distastetul to the national pride, but really it amounts to nothing more than a sentimental concession. Nobody expected that we should gain anything in sub- stance by putting in the demand for conse- quential damages. It was in the nature of an “asking price,” allowing a margin for a fall to ‘taking pri It would certainly be more in accordance with national dignity to demand only what is fair and just, and accept nothing less, but this is not the fashion of that fine thing called diplomacy. The time will come, perhaps, when the business intercourse of nations will be transacted like that between individaals, with honest directness, as the best policy, aside trom its moral aspects; but for the present none of the governments of the world seem inclined to set up one-price shops. 120e- ‘The Hon. Charles Francis Adams has had a presidential nomination thrust upon him after all. Itremains to be seen whether he will ask to have his name “ drawn out of that crowd.” ‘The anti-secret society convention, in session at Oberlin, Obio, last week, completed its business and adjourned on Thursday evening, after nom- nating Charles Francis Adams, of Massachu- fetts, for President, and General Charles Hor ard, of Illinois, for Vice President. The con- vention adopted a resolution asserting their belief “that the network of secret orders, now spread and spreading throughout this country ad the world, is engentially different from and opposed to a Christian church and a republican state.” The Philadelphia Ledger bas at last been obliged to resort to supplementary sheets to accommodate its embarrassing amount of ad- vertising. The difficulty with the Ledger, here- tofore, im the way of seeking relief by supple- ments, has been how to print and fold the sup- plementary sheets with the enormous regular edition im season to supply subscribers and newsmen, bat Mr. Childs seems to have hit upon some means of accomplishing it. The remarkable success of the Ledger, conducted without a particle of sensation “ enterprise,” or clay-trap, is a wholesome lesson, showing that readers and advertisers alike prefer a newspaper that is run on straightforward business prin- ciples. The bill providing for the reissue of the Na- tional Bank currency will, it is stated, go over until next session, when Kepresentative Mon- Toe, of Ohio, who has it in charge, will endeavor to pass it. It is a great pity that the “economy” which prompts the delay of this necessary meas- ure should not have been applied in directions where it would have stopped larger expendi- tures for Purposes not as legitimate. cee The Massachusetts board of health r report an alarming increase in the use of opiam in that state, and ascribe it to the prohibition of the use of liquor. The question with the temper- ‘ance agitators now is, whether they will pro- hibit the sale of opium except on @ physician's Preseription. =i ‘The Greeley men are not quoting Senator Ferry uch asthey were. In his last letter (to J. B. Ferris) he says that to entrust our great national interests -‘to an administration made up and controlled by Mr. Greeley would we mere mid-summer madness,” ‘The Senate Finance Committee declareunan, imeusly in favor of the adjournment of Congress until Monday, June 3d. There is so much business om hand—the tariff and tax Dill, fortincation bill, &e—that the postpone. awent will undoubtedly be made. eee tate tances ‘The democrats must be pretty “*umbie’ when they accept as their candidate the man who wrote (see Tribwne):—“ All democrats are not horse-thieves, but all horse-thieves are emocrats.” ‘Somebody will be saying that our Board of Health doesn’t amount to much, if it allows such @ noterious nuisance as the stinking manure heaps on Water street, at the feot of Ninth street, to remain undisturbed. s airiving in N = in New S7-On two emigrant shi; ee heme and 22d y and as many sore canes now in | culty here presented would be a serious one indeed er bottle i EROGGIERS, £1.25 » kD,1105 Pa. ave..and, MOND & CO.
