VENING STAR. ~ CROSBY 8. NOYES......Editor. Largest Circulation in the District Reading Matter on Every Page, WASHINGTON CITY: THU B*DAY......-.000+.s4.-May 9, 1872. = > If the froceedings so far of the American Medical Association now in session in Philadel- phia may be regarded as an indication of its spirit, we fear the days of that organization will be few and full of troubie. It commenced its proceedings by ostracising not colored delegates only, but a number of white delegates also, because they were will- ing to recognize and consult with physicians of color. Next, a report was favorably received from the committee on education which recom- mens to the legislative bodieg of the country that ne more charters be grafted for medical colleges which do not adopt the plan for educa- tion endorsed by the association. and that legis- latures be asked to revoke all charters for col- leges not adopting the plan of the association, and that no delegates be admitted from institu- tions refusing to adopt such plan. This was very appropriately followed by the adoption ef ® resolution which provides that physicians at- tending families by contract or by the year, or who bid for practice at less rates than the reg- ular graduates, are to be classed among irreg- ular practitioners. It now only remains for this fine old relic of feudalism to prevent in some way the use of all sunshine, air, and other life-giving properties furnished by nature which are not sifted through its conservative sieve. It must, by the way, be mortifying to the members of an association so little in harmony ygith the spirit of the present age, to recognize the fact that the habit of boiling people in oil for minor offences has gone out of use. rela A number of clerks in St. Louis have organ- ized a co-operative realestate association. The plan is to obtain one hundred members, who will each pay an initiation fee of five dollars and a weekly due of one. When $5,000 has been raised, they intend to buy a piece of land within the city limits, subdivide it, sell the sub- divisions to the highest bidders among their number, and then repeat the operation until each one of them has alot. Then the same | scheme is to be followed in relation to building, | until the benefits of the association culminate | in giving every one of its members a home, free | from incumbrance. The scheme is perfectly feasible, and, if managed honestly and intelli- gently, is sure to succeed. It is worth trying by the government clerks in this city, for the op- rortunities for good investments in real estate | here are numerous. By judicious purchases these co-operative investments might be made profitable to a numerous class who have not saf- ficient means to operate individually. - — gents ee Semanns tenensae coe ennessee convent are arriving at Nashville, and the opinion. pee- Cincinnati por the nomina- no tion of a det ete Tas cgtend enenaer ae eomewete | state central committee Illinois, at Chicago | yy afternoon, was very brief. Tue Sitvation ty Spaiw.—The accounts from Spain of the situation in regard to the Carlist insurrection are as conflicting and con- tradictory as ble. Official despa re- ceived at Madrid tell of the disappearance of the insurgents from Guipuzcoa; that but few remain in Sari and in Navarre, andall who did surrender have been dispersed. Don Carios, it is asserted, has fled to France with but «single companion. On the contrary bis friends at Paris learn that he has seven or eight thousand men, well supplied with all necessary munition of war in Biscay. His organs deny that any of the leaders have re- turned to France, and declare that his forces hold important points in Guipuzcoa, and are masters of all Biscay. A letter is said to have been received from Don Carlos, dated 6th, in which he says that his prospects are excellent, and but for prudential reasons he could impart good news. Goov Wonrps.—The N.¥. Tribune may not be always a safe guide in politics, but its head was level when it said to workingmen:—“ Above all, to be a successful mechanic, you must be a mathematician. Unless you can conquer the mathematics of this trade, you will always hare to drudge at the hardest work done. With a thorough practical knowledge of the work and the principles underlying it, you will soon rise sbove the lathe and file. Study aud work to- gether.” A LETTER from Mr. Wendell Phillips was read at the meeting of the Reform League in New York, Tuesday evening, in which the elo- quent agitator expressed prophetically that the coming campaign would be the last in which the de: ic and repnblican parties, as such, “Whichever party succeeds,” die in the effort.”” would he says, “both s7 Among the competitors for the darning, prize lately offered at the Georgia state fair one lady presented a stocking #0 neatly mended that the judge could not find the mark of the nee be PERSONS DESIRING TO BE BEPRE- sented in the Alphabetical Business Directo ry jm the DAILY StaR. for the current year, should address immediately Box 16 , Star o itt NOTICE—The members of MOUNT VER ‘NOT! Mr. Greeley must have thought so, too, for in an article in yesterday's Tribune he expressed the opinion that “the re- maining national conventionsof the year” should be held in Cincinnati. see. ‘The popular theory that small-pox cannot ex- ist as an epidemic in summer, does not seem to be sustained by facts. Instead of disappearing from New York with the advent of warm weather, as was confidently expected, it is alarm- ingly on the increase.
