_EVENING STAR. _ «Bossy s. NOYES weiter, Largest Circulation in the District Reading Matter on Every Page. Page. WASHINGTON CITY: DAY............February 26, 1973. The First fe ae Paper—Who | ‘The old question of who published the first | Teligious nowspaper in the world has been re- vived, and is just now being discussed with some warmth through the columns of the New Vork Erening Pest. The credit is claimed for the late Nathaniel Willis, by his son Richard Storrs Willis, and also for the late Sidney E. Morse, by his son G.L. Morse. Each asserts that bis father was the person who founded the Boston Recorder, on the 3d day of January, 1316, and both assume and undertake to establish the generally admitted fact that that was the first religious newspaper ever published anywhere. Considering what seme of them have come to be im these latter days, the honor of having founded that particular class of newspapers may perbars be regarded by some persons as a rather doubtful one; but, whatever it is, it does not be- jong to either Mr. Willis or Mr. Morse. Nor was the Boston Recorder the pioneer in the field of religious journalism, as has generally been supposed. We have in our possession the first volume complete, of The Weekly Recorder, a rel (Presbyterian) newspaper, published by John Andrews, on the 5th day of July, 1814, and during the year following, at Chillicothe, Ohio. ‘This date, it will be observed, is @ year anda half earlier than the commencement of its Boston namesake. The paper is in quarto or eight page form, each page consisting of three columns, of about ten inches in length, and two- and-a-half inches In width. It was printed with pica or small pica type, on the rough greenish- gray paper of that period, and presents a fair typographical appearance, ail things considered: The motto of the paper, standing under the main title on the first page, is quoted from Solo- thon, as follows: “ Righteousness eralieth « | Dundreary says, “no fellow c: Nation: but sin is a reproach to any People.” The plan and purpose of the paper are set forth in | the following extract from the somewhat lengthy | ‘Introduetion,” printed ou the first and second |% pages of the first number “ The objects cgntemplated, through the bless- ing of Heaven, in the publication of the Week/y Recorder, are various, benevolent and impor- tant. To convey every kind of useful intelli- 1 gence; to diffuse evangelical and moral trath; to check the progress of vice and error; to promote vital piety, civil order and social happiness; to encourage useful literature, arts and science to excite a desire of knowledge and mental i provement; to meliorate the state of schools and academies; and to call the attention of our fel- , low citizens, as occasion may offer, to the omnipotent hand ef the Most High, directing | national concerns—are some of the leading ob- jects which we have in contemplation, aud de- ‘sign uniformly to pursue. Following the iptroductory article came one nearly three columns in length, under the gen- eral head of “ THRoLoGy,” being “ A Summary View of Bible Socirties;” then a short one in re- gard to the “ Synod of Ohvo;” and thenone about two columns in length, under the general head of “ CurreTiaN PRactice,” on the subject of “ Pastoral Visits.” These were followed in tarn | by an article om the “ State of Literature im the Western Country,” about a column and a half in length, and a review, filling nearly three columns, on a theological work then recently published by Thomas Yeates, late of the Univer- sity of Oxford, entitled “ A Collation of an Indian Copy of the Pentateuch. * Also a col- lation and description ot a manuscript roll of the book of Esther, and the Megillah of Abasuerns, from the Hebrew copy originally extant in brazen Tablets at Goa,” &c., &c. The re- mainder of the space in the tirst number—which is a fair specimen of the whole fifty-two consti- tuting the first volume—is thiefly devoted to general and domestic intelligence,—due promi- nence being giventomorai and religious atfairs, | and aseriows and reverent tone beingobservable | throughout. A few advertisements andthe pub- | lisher’s prospectus are to be found on the eighth | page,—the latter being, as was always the case | | in those times, and, indeed, until within a few r the very last thing in the paper. These tacts, it must be admitted, effectually dispose of the claims of both Mr. Willis and Mr. Morse to be regarded as the father of religious m, and also of the commonly accepted beliet that the Bosfon Recorder was the first pa- per of its class ever published. It must also be conceded, we think, that the honor of the first rightfully belongs to John Andrews, of Ohi: 0, | and that the title of pioneer falls upon his paper, The Weekly Recorder, which, it may be added, will not suffer by @ comparison as to tone and | 4 character with most of its larger and more pre- tentious successors of the present day. | While it has always been considered both re- | markable and creditable that America should | have given religious newspapers to the world, it is even more noticeable and significant that the | idea should have been conceived and first carried ont ina village of @ few hundred inkabitants, situated in a new and * sparsely-settled state, which was then literally upon the western verge of civilization. —— ae If the clamor of the English papers over the American “case” was designed to influence opinion im Europe, they have slightly overdone it. Their threats that England would repudiate the treaty have been met with the decided con- demmation of candid and intelligent writers on | the Continent. The Memoria! Diplomatiqu-, the Organ of the most intelligent and dispassionate iplomatic thought, in a significant article, fully coudemns the position which England has taken, and imsists that she would be entirely without justification im withdrawing from the arbitration. The Cabinet meeting here last } Friday with reference to the answer to Earl Granville’s note has again started a newspaper discussion im this country om the question of | “cousequential damages,” and the Igading journals, without regard to politics, seem dis- posed to sustain the administration in maintain- img & firm attitude im its adherence to “our case” as presemted. The New York World nks the government may count upon the un- «livided support of the country, and quotes with approval an expression of Webster's when he ‘estentered Congress: “ Let party differences «case at the water's edge.” The Tridunc thinks ~if England now refuses to be bound by a bar- vain of her own making, we should remain and our cause before the board, and a proper regerd for justice and their own dignity will ‘oubtless induce the representatives of Italy, Brazil and Switzerland to remain and bear the case of the power which loyally abides by the ‘reaty. A verdict im our favor under these cir- cumstances would be just as eatistactory as if both parties had remained in court, and would tend to discourage future revolts from where one of the parties may conclude that all the advantage is not on its side.” This is the correct view. If the arbitrators decide that it peo intended to include indirect in clauses to be passed upon by them, the can throw them out. If they decide ns so let it be. In either event this country abide by their decision. ‘ics weatd Judge Dwinelle, of California, has put his opinion on recerd that there are women who ery before they are hart. In a case recently tried before him, he decided that the fact of a woran being seen frequently in tears is not suficient proof of her husband's cruelty to her to entitle her to a divorce. ‘The women ought to impeach him. a “ Recerder A. Pollok, of Washington,” was recording bis mame st the New York hotels again on Friday. That seems to be his business; and it must pay, or he wouldn’t keep it up. But Who the dickens is he? One of our exc! nges, in an article on “ the | honeymoon,” tries to persuade young ma-ried people that it is better for them to stay quietly at home at such an interesting period of thoir existence, and not go wandering off om exhibition, Most people will agree with the writer, to one if he is a single mam and ever gets mar- ried, he will do just as the others do. Why a wedding tour should be comsidered the earrect thing is one of those conundrums which, a6 fied out.” If our brides could be persuaded to forego the blessed privilege of leading their prizes around | with a ribbon, we would recommend, for a change, the singular custom which prevails at Nassau, New Providence. Near that place there is a solitary honse, pleasantly situated, where all the newly married couples go to pass the honeymoon. They take a servant or two 4 steal away from the town to this place, from which, after “a Becoming period” is passed, they come forth again. —-+20e- A writer in the Portland, Me., Advertiser, does not give much encouragement tothe prohibition party, which has just put a candidate for the Presidency in thefield. He says ‘that probably never since Portland became a city, im 1852, hag there been so much rum drinking, so mapy shops where the article is pablicly sell, as now.” Con- sidering the facts that Maine is the state which originated the probibitory Jaw, and that it friends claim it Is enforced there, this ony does not seem to argue well tor the practicabili- ty of suppressing intemperance by such means. SES HS RAO It ws anencouraging sign of progress and better feeling in the southern states that the Louisville Ledger has ceased to exist for want of support. Asa newspaper it was better than the average, and it was also condacted with considerabi ability editorially; but its teachings were so far bebind the age and so at variance with the spirit of progress and national good feeling that its taking off may be considered a public gain. 1.0. 0.
