Corse.—Gazette, 10th inst Tne Care oF Lamps.—The easiest way to clean petroleum lamps is to wash with thin milk of lime, which forms an emulsion with the pe- troleum, and removes every trace of it, and by washing a second time with milk of lime and a small quantity of chloride of lime, even the smell may be so completely removed as to ren- der the vessel thus cleansed fit for keeping bev- erages in. If the wilk of lime be used warm, fi ail of cold, the operation is rendered much shorter. The best time for cleanin, ing, for reasons of safety, if not convenience. Scarcely a week passes’ during the winter months, but we read accounts of frightful acci- dents from kerosene lamps exploding and kill- ing or scarring for life women and children. A simple knowledge of the inflammable nature of the fluid would probably put a stop to nearly all the accidents. As the oil burns down into the ‘amp, a highly imflammable gas gathers its surface, and as the oil decreases the gas creases. When the oil is nearly consumed, slight jar will often inflame the gas, and an e: plosion is sure to foliow, dealing with it death and destruction. A bombshell is not more to be dreaded. Now if the lamp is not allowed to burn more than half way down, such accidents sre almost impossible. Always fill your lamp in the morning; then y: fear an ex- plosion.— Rural Home. A BruTat FatHer.—The Memphis Appeal, 5th inst., tell the following story of neglect and brutality: ‘A person who farms for a living, some distance the city, rode in a spring wagon inte town yesterday, bringing with him aliftieson. After figuring’ around for an hour or two, doing world!y business, he pulled up in front of « pow! in the suburbs and went in to re.tesh and comfort himseif. leaving the boy to take care of the horses. The man met some companions in doors with whom he set about becoming convivial, as isthe custom of those who ayeoty ord in suburban groceries. Time sped on.and the boy im the wagon became numbed ith the cold, and fell into a stupor. The them is the morn- lines” dropped from his fingers, and the horse walked off. When it was time to disperse trom the grocery the excellent ftatuer and feeling parent couid find neither wagon nor boy. He nt the whole evening looking for them in the ity, and was going home in a half crazed state when he met his trusty colored man riding in for a doctor, saying the by ‘ Tommy was frozen to death.’ The horse bad walked home, and the stiff child was found still sitting in his seat.” How To Extgact Corrgg.—A scientific paper says: If coftee, after roasting, were made as fine as flour by pounding in a mortar, it conld be extracted so much better as to require no more than two-fifths as mach if it were coarsel, ee. An equally streng extract can be ma y allowing water to stand on the ground, as by giving it a boil or filtering through it. The latter method is the trae one for retaining all of the aroma. When coffee beans are roasted, an em- pyreumatic oil is produced. which being volatile, is expelled if the coffee extract be boiled. It is better to make the grounds as fine as flour, and to extract by filtration, and never to boil.
