NOYES. «+0+- Editor. i Largest Circulation in the District — mater oe on = Peg | ‘The more orderly citizens of Louisiana are | having a pretty rough time of it throagh the | unscrupulous and vindictive warfare of the contending factions who are undertaking to rom the republican party of that state. It ts hard to say which set is the most blameable and obnoxious, but a general average shows them to be first-class nuisances so far as the interests Of that state are concerned. On one side War- moth, governor, bled the taxepayers after a style that suggests mutnal emulation between him and Governor Scott of South Carolina. ‘Then the custom-house party—Casey, Packard, and the rest—tavored by the wrath of the over- bardened people against Warmoth—got tem- porary ascendancy, and, with the lieutenant governor ani speaker of the house on their side, took possession of the state convention ‘The death of the lieutenant governor, however, gave Warmoth the opportunity to chiner his adversarks at their own game by getting his colored striker, Pinchbeck, elected to the vacant office by the senate convened by him in extra session and the extraordinary pr: by telegraph, have taken p! tom-houre senators, finding in a minority, withdrew in order to leave their branch to put themselves out of reach of the sergeant- at-arms went on board the revenue cutter. Speaker Carter. however, declined to vacate, declared the vote illegal, and, backed up by his “ body-guard,” held possession of the chair until the house ad- jJourned on that day—Wednesday. On Thars- day the marshal, (Packard,) on behalf of the custom-house party, arrested the Governor and eighteen of the representatives upon some myth- ieal charge, and while they were in custody the custom-house representatives met—without a quorum, it is alleged id shaped things to suit themselves by unseating half a dozen War- moth men and putting their ogn adhercuts in their pli it was then Warmoth’s play, and the card Ae put down was to summon the legislature in special hursday afternoon, when Speaker Carter was expelled in the house by a vote of 49 to 5, and a Warmoth man elected to the chair. Warmoth having possession, held pos- session and had his house of representatives guarded by the metr eand by the militia. It may be and probably will be said that society has lost bat little by the occurrence; but this has nothing to do with the matter now. It is true that, while | the dead man was not without somagood poin‘s, and had almost risen to the plane of a public benefactor in what he had done in one way and | another for the comfort of travelers, yet his instinets were base, his life bad, and his influ- ence corrupting and demoralizing. And it is but little to his credit that in his raids upon society he generally robbed only the rich. These things, however, afford no palliation for the assassination. nor was there anything in the cir- | cumstances immediately preceding the tragedy to provoke a personal altercation. As the murder was in the last degree anpro- yoked and cowardly, so should the punishment ef the murderer be swift and extreme.
