EVENING STAR. | DOUBLE SHEET. YES.......Editor. Largest Circulation in the Distriet Reading Matter on Every Page. WASHINGTON CITY: SATURDAT.........December 23, 1871. No Paper on Monday. As Monday ie s legal holiday, and for the pur- pose of giving all connected with Tas Evaniso S¥ak establishment an opportunity of partici- pating in the festivities of Christmas, no paper ‘will be issued from this office on Monday. Of course it is difficult if not impossible to make up for the omission of a single issue of a live news- paper, but the deficiency thus caused is made good, as far as it is possible to make it, by the ex- traordinary quantity of interesting reading mat- ter furnished in to-day’sedition. In this respect the readers of no paper in tire world are so well served as those of Tux Star. iene The Market Company have done a brutal and serseless thing in driving the countrymen from the open spaces near the market up to the bleak ont of the way place near 10th street bridge. It is doubtful if the act authorizing the city to | occupy the ground near the 1th street bridge for a market for the countrymen empowers the Market Company to drive them up there; and | certainly they cannot do so until some accom- modations have been sapplied there, and the ground made fit for the purposes desig- nated. But granting that the company have the power, it was a most extraordinary and indefensible deed, to enforce that powor at this inclement season, driving the countrymen nto a cold, inaccessible place, where there were 0 customers, and enabling the hucksters at the | market to put up their own prices. The coun- | trymen are natarally indignant at their treat- ment, and some of them who have attended | Center market for many years declare that this | a is the last time they will come to this city,or | certainly to the vicinity of this market. In | other cities it is considered a wise thing to encourage countrymen to bring in their produce. — We imagine that the Hon. Reverdy Johnson, | one of the counsel for the kukInux prisoners now on trial at Columbia, South Carolina, will not be of much service to his clients, if he talks to i the jury as he is reported to have done on Sat- | urday last im the trial of Robert Hayes Mitchell, whe has been convicted of aiding in the murder of a colored man named Jim Williams. His colleague, ex-Attorney General Stanbury, ar- gued justification, and went so far as to say that if “I had lived im Tarr connty, I wow'd have joined the first squad to go and arrest Jim Wil- fiams.”” He went still farther, and addressing the jury, composed in part of colored men, said, “1 tell you, colored men, that if you undertake to make one step beyond the white man your doom is sealed.” Mr. Johnson, who fullowed for the defence, took a different line of argu- ment. He thanked € hat slavery is ended, and trusted in heaven it would never again be fermitted anywhere in the civilized world. In referring to the outrages proved on the trial, he said “he had listened with unmixed horror to the outrages that had been proved—they were inhuman—not to be palliated or excused, and they show that the parties engaged in them were fiends, insensible to the laws of God and humanity.” Admitting the facts as proved on the trial, Mr. Jobnson then went on to argue that no conspiracy had existed according to law, amd that therefore his clients could not be held amenable. Those who engaged Mr. Johnson evidently believed that he-would sink the hon- est man and patriot in the pettifogger, but the result showed that they were mistaken in their estimate of his heesmgecl CROSBY 5B. How many little children. in Washington will have to go without a Christmas present this year beeause their parents have squandered the money needed for that purpose at the swindling lottery concern which has been in fall blast op | posite Tat STAR office for a week past’? Hun- dreds of them, no doubt. If only those persons patronized it who can affordto lose their money, the effeet would not be so bad in one sense, though of courss the moral objection woald re. | main just the same; bat @ very large majority of its customers are those who absolutely need the money to buy bread or shoes and stockings for their children. For nearly every dollar spent there some little one must go hungry; and yet, the public will be surprised to learn, no ay has been found by our authorities to close it up! After the sharpers who run the coacern have cleared out the town we suppose some | means will be devised to make them stop their unlawful traffic, just as people lock their stable Aftet the horse is stolen. -<ee- Mr. Peter B.
