Philadelphia is agitated over the question of compelling all of the children in the city to at- temd school. The board of education think com- pulsory education @ good thing, and certain members of the legislature favor ths passage of & stringent lawon the subject. All agree as to the desirability of some such measure, with- out considering its practicability. The news- papers, however, have supplied the omission, and already several serious practical difficulties lave been suggested. In the first place while there are 25,000 child in the city not attend. img any sehool, large numbers are annually do- nied admission to the public schools for want of room. Thusit isclear to begin with, that if a law &» passed to enforce their attendance, school houses and teachers for these 25.000 must be When that is done a sufficient police be employed to ferret out the absen- | sand stubborn parents. To do allthis money To raissthe money taxes must be increased, and that is where the shoe pinches. ‘The opposition to the measure is already #0 for- midable that the prospect of the passage of a compulsory education law is not very flattering to tts supporters. These same reasons which will defeat the law in Philadelphia apply to other cities; but the fact stili remains that no child should be allowed to grow up in any com- munity without the opportunity for 8 common schoo! education. Political conventions are announced as fol- lows: Kepublican in New Hampshire January Sd. There are to be no less than four state tick- ets in the field at the Connecticat election next | April. The labor reformers are dissatisfied with | the action of the prohibitionists, and will hold a convention at Bridgeport also on January 3d. ‘The MWheral republicans in Missouri hoid their convention January 2ith—not 20th as first ane nounced. The Indiana republican state conven- ton, which ts to be held in Indianapolis Febru- ary 22, will nominate candidates for governor, ii of state, treasurer of state, clerk of the sapreme | court, reporter of the supreme court, superin- tendent of public instruction, attorney general, | and congressman at large, and will appoint dele- | gates to the national repablican convention. It | will consist of about 1,500 delegateson the basis | ~ of one foreach one hundred votes cast for the repoblican candidate for Secretary of State in | 18@.
