A Promisixe Youru.—Last night, an intelli- gent appearing colored boy, about fifte: of age, applied for employment to Cha: Edwards, druggist, at No. 192 Bridge street. He told a pitiful story, which so wrought upon the = of Mr. Fdwards thar he offered him the situation of errand boy in his store. The young seamp gratefully accepted the offer, and daving the evening: made himself useful in various ways about the store. This morning about four o’clock the boy, who slept in a room adjoining that of his employer, arose and going into Mr. Edwards’ sleeping apartment, rifled his pants of the sum of $150 in greenbacks. Not content with this theft, the young thief proceeded down stairs to the store, where managed to wrench the money drawer from its place and conceal it under his coat. He then left the store, and has not since been seen or heard of. The police are on his track, and it is hardty possible that he will escape. He gave his name as William Wilson There was about £20 in the moncy drawer, much of it in silver, which makes the total amount of the theft #1 THE SEVERE WEATHER has obliged the sus- pension of all work on the Bridge street im- provements. The deceased was an estimable citizen, his loss is deplored by a large circle of friends. A Prospzrovs SEASoN.—The coal trade this season has been more prosperous than ever before. Theshipments from Cumberland per canal this vear were $47,448 tons, which is an in- crease of 24,238 tons over last year. The ship- ments from the same point via. the Baltimore and Ohio railroad, were 1,366 517, tons which is an increase of 284,472 tons over last year. The shipment of coal by schooner from this port will be resumed when navigation again opens, THERE WAS NO GRAIN on the market to-day. THE RIVER AND CANAL are frozen over tight to-day.
