_EVENING STAR. | WASHINGTON CITY: FRIDAY.....000..-...December 8, 1871. While most of the states are settling down | after their several elections heid in the summer and fall, New Hamyshire has just entered upon her annual political campaign. The contest was opened with the convention of the probibition | 7 party held im Concord on Wednesday. A ballot for candidate for Governor resulted in the al- most unanimous choice of Dr. John Blackmore. An address to the people, presenting the evils of imtemperance and the necessity of making the | question of prohibition by law a distinet politi- cal issue so long as existing partice refuse to have anything to do with it, was adopted, and the customary series of resolutions was passed. | This convention was followed by that of the labor reformers, also at Concord, yesterday. ‘This party, which cast less than a thousand | votes for Governor last year, held the balance | of power at that election, and defeated the re- publican party, which was inert and divided. ‘They are called in New Hampshire assistant | democrats. They have mvariably acted with | the democrats, and when the latter were suc- cessful claimed the chief offices as their share | Of the spoils. They yesterday nominated their | gubernatorial candidate of last year, Hon. Lem- wel P.Cooper, an old NewHampshire farmer, and an original free-soiler. The democrats, who hold their convention on Wednesday next, will prob- ably renominate Gov. Weston; and the republi- | © cans, who hold theirs on Wednesday, the 3d of | January, one of these four—Hon. E. A. Straw, | f Manchester: Hon. Horton D. Walker, of Portsmouth; Hon. Samuel W. Hale, of Keene, or Gen. Natt Head. The chances seem tobe | in favor of Mr. Straw; the others follow im the | ana order they are named. Gov. Weston, the | present democratic Governor of the state, is | pronounced by both his friends and foes ‘‘ hon- est but weak,” and his administration vacilla- ting and unsatisfactory. For this reason and others the republicans, who are almost unani- | mous in favor of the renomination of President Grant, claim that they will carry the state at the election next March by at least 3,000 ma- ia —+see- ‘Arkansas to | gouttawe for thie soe srlipg at Oxwegn.fochester and | | Buffalo, FINANCIAL AND Government Securities pin 5-0, eer WANTS. iW a et PP «pti te Leer’ — T E CLEARING SALE Ste ae | Wastkbotes Hp 3 momen HE 1) SiR a y Apply at ©. Ex-President Andrew Jobuson is utterly opposed to the Passive policy. and is reported by an interviewer of the Cincin- | nati Commercial as saying that a surrender is as ue as a lefeat, and that the plan recommended “is a Vallandigham departure on a large scale, and is a farce and a fraud. What was the Val- landigham departure? It placed the demo- cratic party in the position of whining curs on the outside, and saying to the radi- cals inside: ‘ Now you get out and let us in, and we'll carry out your pians and get on your plat- form. (Only let us have the spoils, and we'll do just as you are doing.’ ‘That was the Vallandig- bam departure. It was a proposed surrender of principle for place and spoil.” So much for Andy. Gov. Hoffman, of New York, on the other band, has changed base since the July riots and Tammany defeat destroyed his chances for the democratic nomination, and according to an Albany dispatch in the New York Post, in renouncing the prospect of being a candidate he also renounces his long-cherished adherence to the democratic party. He is unreserved in his conviction that the party must be dissolved. For a long time he looke: for its simple reorgan- ization upon the basis of the existing state and national organizations, but the utter overthrow of itin New York and its popular defeat in other | states, too late to rally for next year's election, satisty him that the final judgmentof the people bas been pronounced upon the party, under its Present leaders, without regard to ‘new de- partures ” or “‘ancient usages,” “ passive poli- cies,” or “ reconstructed platforms.” He is for ® new party out and out, and is ready toact | with Horace Greeley, Carl Schurz, and Charles Sumner in forming one on the basis of national reform, a strict construction, and thesupremacy | of the civil over vil over the military power. —ee-—___ The convention of Methodist Episcopal churches of the state of New York, in session at Syracuse this week, and attended by about four hundred delegates, bas adopted resolutions in favor of sustaining the present public school system ; for a union of all lovers of the system | in its defence ; insisting upon the moral element in instruction ; and fer petitioning the next Le- gislature to take steps to secure an amendment to the state constitution, and peremptorily pro-_ hibiting the appropriation by the state or muni- cipal authorities of public funds for the support of sectarian : schools. = i Miss Carrie S. Burnham, whose vote was re- fused in Philadelphia, at the late state election has taken the case into the Court of Nisi Prius | in that city. As she is studying law, with the hope of admission to the bar, it is a good adver- tisement of her profession to become her own client, as she has done, and claim the constitu- tional right to be beard in herown cause. The question to be decided there is the same which | the Supreme Court in this District decided ad- versely, and that is whether the right of voting is @ necessary accompaniment of the right of citizenship. +s0e- English papers by the last steamer contain the speech of Sir Charles Dilke, lately delivered at Leeds. It isatemperate defence of repuleii- ean principles, and he makes a good point by saying that the cost of a monarchy is no argu- ment for a republic; he would favor a republic, though its cost were far greater than a mon- areby. es United States Treasurer Spinner rday re- ceived the sum of $53.10 from New York. The writer did not give his name. but stated that had “gouged” government of the sam whiee he forwarded. He could not, of course, have been a member of the Tammany Ring; tacy never make restitution.—V. Y. Mai.
