THE Jon. Bed BLZL EME. 850,000 of Government Fauds 4b. stracted Stock Specuiation at the Bottom of it. The investigation inte the alleged detfaication of Francis A. Marden, chief of the division of accounts in the office of Treasurer Spinner—an account of which was published in Tuk Star of yesterday—revealed another defalcation, of a much larger sum, which was traced to Seth Jobnson, interest teller in the cash room. It was discovered during the investigation that he had abstracted fifty thousand dollars of the public money. Johnson has been in the department about eight years, and was one of the most trusted clerks in the Treasurer's bureau. He a native of New York, and before coming t Washington was employed by Gen. his bank. Some two years ago Gen. Spinner had bis suspicions aroused upon learning that Jobusc i imperted from Europe TWO GOLD WATCHES at a cost of five hundred dollars each. The matter was investigated, but it was ascertained that he had traded several old watches, and represented that he had received some money am his father, hence no importance was at- ched to the matter. Again, it was represented to General Spinner that Johnson was living beyond his income, but, upon inquiry, not! definite could be ascertained, and, as his ac- counts appeared to be correct upon examination, nothing more was thought of these reports. It bew appears that Johnson made his accounts appear correct by FORCED ENTRIES TFON HIS ROOKS. The lack of force inthe Treasurer's office ren- dered it necessary in his instance that he should keep his own us well as handle the money, hence it was an easy matter for him to make en” tries to hide his guilt. appears that several menced using govern SPRCULATI here and in New York. Kecently he opened an account with Fant & Co., of this city, alleging that a weaithy friend of his, E. L. Sherman, patent lawyer. of New Lork cil had remitted him money to speculate with in stocks. in the month ot October, net long after the account rT. rs ago Johnson vt funds in Was opened, suspicion was aroused in the minds of Fant, Washington & Co. that something was wrong. ‘They promptly notified Mr. Johnson that the account should remain sacred and un- disturbed until they could see Mr. Sherman and satisfy themselves that it was Sherman's money. ir. rman wrote a letter to said firm recoz- he account as his. Fant & Co. were still stied, and on pushing their inquires still further, Johueon finally confessed that it was GOVERNMENT MONEY THAT HE WAS USING, and that Sherman knew the fact for several years; and further, that the embezzlement com- enced many years ago. The moment Johuson admitted to Fant, Washington & Co. (Monday, December 4, 1-71,) that he was using govern- ment funds that firm promptly made known the fact to Gen. Spinner. The amount to his ered t with Fant, Washington & Co. is about $11,000. To cover Lis previous defateations he abstracted the sum of $00,000 on the 1ith of May last, but it has not yet been ascertained from what ac- count he took the money. ‘The officials are now examining into that; but as the examination involves some correspondence, it will probably be a day or two before it is ascertained from what account he took it. Jehuson MARRIED A BEW YORK LaDY some five years ago, and resides on N street, where he keeps house, and has bis wife’s parents reside with him. He is now very ill, and cannot be tried, a8 bis condition is too critical to per- mitof his removal. le bas confessed his crime, however, and the balance of $11,000 in bank to his credit will be taken possession of by the gov- erument. It is net positively known if there was any collusion between Johnson ‘arden, whose defaleation mc ge mag yesterday, but it seems to be the opi that the former had some knowledge of the fraudulent transactions of the latter, but Marden had no know! of the frauds of Johnson. ‘The total defaication of the two to-day is belleved to be SIXTY-TWO THOURSARD DOLLARS— $50,000 for Johnsop, and $12,000 tor Marden— bui the $11,000 in bank to Johnson's credit re- luces the total amount to $51,090. GENERAL SPINNER considers himself in honor bound to make good the amounts abstracted from his office, and did immediately seplace the $7,500 abstracted by Edwins a few vears since. Congress, however, refunded this sum to Gen. Spinner. He con- it his obligation new to make good the ot both Marden and Johnson, but 6 will no doubt relie defalcations ch Ted in the ‘a Gan. vr has had -harge were: First, that of Charles H. The rate of speed with which they travel trom one part of her body to another is wonderful. At night she felt them in her cheek, and at 5 o’clock the next morning they were in her arm.
