Meetings Last Night. Both political parties are now actively at work, and as election day approaches the imerest in- creases. MR. CASSIN NOMINATED BY THE THIRD DISTRICT DEMOCRATS. A meeting of the democrats of the 34 district— Georgetown, west of High strect—wae held at Markethouse Hall, Georgetown, last night, Mr, Esau Pickereli iv thechair, and Mr. Peter Berry secretary. Mr.J. Carter Marbury offered reso- lutions, which were adopted, approving the course of Mr. W. D. Cassin in the House of Del- egates, and deciaring him the umanimoss choice ©f the democracy of the 34d district for the next legislature. Mestre. J. C. Marbury, E. Cam- mack, W. Trunneil, A. Kodier Jekn Don- nelly were appointed an execative committee: and Mesers. F. W. Jones, K. K. Sheckell and D. O'Leary a finance committee. Messrs. Donuel- ly, Cropley and MarLury were ted acom- mittee to wait on Mr. Cassin, and soon returned with the nominee, who returned his thanks, and Bud he had endeavored heretofore to advance the interests of the town and the District, especi- ally as to railroads. He referred to his eourse om the Picdmont railroad, which was ef the test importance, particularly to the eity of mgetown. PUBLICAN MEETING IN THE RIGHTH DISTRICT At the meeting of the sth district repub- lican club, last night, George Bi . presi dent, in the chair, Mr. F. A. Boswell, who was present, was called open, and spoke at some length in defence of the present District govern- ment. He was followed by Colonel Perry Carson, who made some good points, and paid his respects to George W. Hatton, saying :—*' Hatton is of no mere use to the repub! party than my dog ‘that died thirteen years ego!” Remarks were sutnequentiy made by Mr. id, the candidate for delegate, Wm. A. The Governor told the delegation that the men ap- pointed were known to him as good republicans and bonest men, and would doubtless do what ‘was right by all the candiaates; besides this, the Jaw required that the namesshould be publisled for fitteen days before the election, except in the event of death or declination of the gentlemen; and under these circumstances it was impossible to comply with the request. The deiegation then withdrew. a > “Tuk OLD Stoky.”—One of the morning papers states that several months since a mar- ried man calling himself Col. G. Fred. Potter, employed in one of the bureaus of the Treasury, deserted his wife and ran away with one of the young female clerks. He and the deluded girl went to New York where they were married and lived together a short time. Finally she became sick and was deserted by the wretch who had lured her to ruim, and left her away from home, without money or friends. The landiady took pity un ber forlorn condition, and ascer- taining the whereabouts of her home sent her to her friends, where she arrived about throe weeks ago, and after a short iliness, as much mental as physical, breathed her last. Potter, it ts stated, is now in the south. The real wife of Potter, we may add, resides in or near Alex- andria.
