SCRAMBLE POR THE FEDERAL OFFICES IN PuitapeLenta.—There isa lively contest going on for the yscant officesin Philadelphia caused by the death of United States Marshal Gregory, the transfe1 Collector Sickells, of the 4th district, to be Pension Agent in place of Forbes, and the resignation by Mayor elect Stokeley of the Asses- sorship of the 2d district. N. Kerns are said to be prominent applicants for Gen’'l Greg- gory’s position. The latest news from England in regard to the new political alliance between the peers and people shows that it was another case of “ great ery and little wool.” Such an alliance was pro- pesed by Mr. Scott Russell, who has prudently absented himself on the continent, from whence ke can watch the storm he has raised, but in whose behalf he was acting has not appeared. The action of the council of workingmen who were parties to the negotiation has been repu- diated at a meeting of representative working- men, as heretofore stated in Tae Star; and the tory lords, severely lectured by the London Times for coquetting with workingmen’s associations, secm to be ashamed of the part they intended te play. They never agreed anyhow, it appears, to do anything more than have a general and patriarchal oversight of the welfare of the la- boring men, as they understood it. They ex- pressly declared themselves in favor of legisla- tion for a7! classes, and were not ready to pledge themselves to any special legislation whatever. ae etna te THE STATE ELECTIONS.
