EVENING STAR. CROSBY S. NOYES.......Ealtor. Largest Circulation in the District Reading Matter on Every Page. WASHINGTON CITY: | Bs MONDAY. ...Nevember 6, 1571. | ‘To-morrow, Illinois, Massachusetts, Mary- land, Minnesota, Mississippi, New Jersey, New York, Virginia and Wisconsin hoid their elections. First in significance ahd interest is | the New York election, rot so much owing to the size and influence of the State, as to the her- culean effortsof the honest men in New York city to ridit of the horde of plunderers who have been fattening at the pw crib for years: Republicans and democrats are working harmo- niously together to break the power of one man sustained by the same agencies that have cre- ated mountainous democratic majorities in New York. Electoral and legal means are both to be employed to this end, the State is in a whirl- wind of excitement; and the result will be awaited with anxiety in all parts of the coan- ty. The legislature has 17 democrats to 14 re- publicars in the Senate, and €5 democrats to 63 repubicans in the Assembly; 5 democratic ma- jority on joint ballot. The democratic majority for Gov. Hoftman in 1870 was 33,096 over Wood- ford. But New York city contributed 52,277 of the democratic majority, that would have been ® minority but for this, that was.wen by instra- mentalities now known to all. In 1869 General Sigel was defeated for Secretary of State by only 2 1 majority, and Seymour had but 9,965 majority over Grant. The city im 1870 gave $5,200 democratic to 33,575 republican votes. Massachusetts, Minnesota, Maryland, New Jersey and Wisconsin elect each a Governor, state officers and legislature. There are four tickets in Massachusetts—the republican, with | *. B. Washburn for Governor; the democratic headed by proposing E. M. Chamberlain, and the pro- hibitionists, captained by R. C. Pittman. In 1f€9 the republicans had 23,405 majority over Adaws, and 9,736 over all; in 1870, 31,013 over Adams, and 8,861 over all; and the last legisia- ture had 229 republican majority on joint ballot. ‘The labor reformers and prohibitionists united polled but 21,946 votes. In Minnesota the repud- licam majority for Governor Austin was 1852 in | 1869, and the last legislature had 15 republican majority im the House aud 9 in the Senate. | Governor Austin is renominated against Win- throp Young, and the result on the gen- eral ticket is as certain as in Massa- | chusetts. Maryland offers Jacob Tome as | republican candidate for Governor, against | Wm. Pinckney Whit: | jority in 1868 was 30,765; for controller in 1869, 29,362, and for Congres: in 1870, 19,015, asteadily | Sern democratic majority, but the State safely be set down as democratic The Legisiatare had no republican members. New Jersey challenges a warm struggle in the nomination of Joel Parker by the democrats for Governor, against Cornelius Walsh. The demo- | cratic majerity for Governor Randolph in 1863 was 4,547; the republican majority on the Con- gressional vote of 1570 was3,423. The Legisla- | ture bad three republican majority in the Sen- ate and eight in the House—11 majority on joint ballot. General C. C. Washburn is the republi- can nominee for Governor of Wiseonsin, against | James R. Doolittle. Governor Fairchild’s, re- | publican, majo: 8,215 im 1869, and tne j republican majority on the Congressioual vote of 1570 was 6.1 The republican majority in the Legislature is 91—In both honses. The Iliinois election is only for a Congressman at large, to replace General Logan, electsd to the United States Senate, and one inthe sixth distriet, viee Burton C. Cook, resigned. Cook's re- publican, majority was in 1870; Logan’s wae | over Anderson, democrat, and 21,228 over | everything. General Beveriege, republican, s. Hayes, democrat, contest Logan’s seat, republican, and Leland, demo- » Cook's district. Here, too, the result is mn the statement. The Virginia and Mississippi elections are for Legislatures only. ‘The former had 54 republicans to 126 democrats in the last Legis @ great democratic ma- jority in both branchs; the latter 108 republicans @ counterbalancing republican —___—_-~e--_____ be seen by an advert!sement elsewhere Collect » Slator gives public prepared, on and after the e the militia tox, and alf vied on real and personal property in the District, for the year ending June 30th, 1872. ‘The penalties for non-payment within the time pecified are fally set forth in the Collector's notice. “= Victoria C.
