Joseph Casey, counsel for the State of Kentucky, pre- sented the petition for a mandamus to compel the Secretary of the Treasury to issue a warrant for $525,258.72, the amount allezed to be due for arms, &c.,on account of the war claim of that State. The papers were taken by the court and a decision will be rendered shortly. The Secre- tary of the Treasury, it will be remembered, re- cently refused to allow these claims. SURGEON Wx. M. Woon, late Chief of the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery in the Navy Department, but now retired, has been ap- pointed Inspector General of Fleets and Hospi- tals. This is said to be a new office, and as the appointment is claimed to have been made inthe face of theorder of September last, which pro- vides that no retired naval officer above the rank of lieutenant commander shail be assigned to or remain upon regular active duty except as a member of the Light House Board and the Naval Hospital, the opigument creates consid- erable talk in naval circles. Riddle appeared as counsel for the accused, who waived a liminary examinacion, and was thereupon feta to bail in the sum of $10,000 to answer the charge betore the Criminal Court, it required to do so.
