RumorED SALE oF A RatLroap.—Rumor still says that the terms of the sale of the Rich- mond, Fredericksburg and Potomac railroad to the Pennsylvania Central have been agreed upon, by representative of the contracting par- ties in Philadelphia.—Gaeette, last evening. ————-s2e--—_ Fire- Buildings, The Scientific American suys:—The Chicago fire has proved that so-called fire-proof buildings may retard the progress of a great fire, but can- not prevent its onward march, when once it has gathered sufficient power in the destruction of wooden buildings. The power of concentrated heat upon stone, bricks, and iron is little appre- ciated by those who rely upon these materials as security from burning. The writer was in the city of Troy at the great fire of 1862, and had an opportunity of witnessing the effect of fire upon several suj d tire-proot buildings, which ‘stood in a direct line of the advancing flames. The heat was blown upon these buildings with almost the intensity of a biast furnace. wrought iron shutters, which were depended upon to protect the windows, curled up and — exposing the glass beneath, which .oon roke or melted, or if supported ’b; , Was almost instantly dro) from the frames. Then the flames found. admission to the buildings, which soon yielded. It wes noticed particularly that cast iron actually seemed to burn, and we have little doubt that in many cases there was actual burn- ing of the metal; the same effect being produced as would be upon the bottoms of cast iron ket- tles placed over fire and containing hot sand. Nearly every one knows that when cast iron is raised toa red heat, rel emg d oxidizes or burns. The extensive use of this material is therefore best practice in rendering buildings fire- roof. 5 the Troy fire, it was seen that even the supposed fireproof :a‘es burned in most cr cs when bas f were not protected by maonry. At the great fire at London Bridge, whicli took place in the summer of 1861, the ready yielding of easi-inon columns, beams; and girders wat specially noticed, and’ formed the subject of an article in the London Review, The fact is, that cast ironis no more to be de- pended on than wood when standing amidst a really great fre. Wrought tron does better, but it too has important defects, among which is its expansibility under heat, which, when its used in conjunc: with masonry, cracks the latter, and thus commences the work of destruction. In short, our nt ms of tireproot.ng need thorough revision and modification, in the Jight of recent experience, before they can de- verve the confidence of the public. Barbarities of the Slave Trade. _ The horrois of the African slave tra le still exist-as the following narrative proves. It ‘s taken irom the evidence by the Rev. Horace Waller, printed in the recent Parliamenta-y rt on the Slave Trade, issued in London idnapping is prevalent all over Africa, leading to alt sorts oe disputes and retalia~ tiows, and the more disturbed the country is the cheaper slaves become. We liberated a gang of eighty- four slavcs one morning, and within a few miles of the place where we liberated them we were shown places in the bush where slaves had beeu killed only that morning.
