_EVENING STAR. | Largest Cireulationin the District Reading Matter on Every Page. | ~ WASHINGTON CITY: MONDAY... «-+--@etober 23, 1871. mperance of Temperance Men. The Good Templars of two western state: were in convention last week, and in both the zeal of the members outran their diseretion. It seems bardly credible, but fs true neverthe- less. that much of the time of the Grand Lodge of Olio was consumed in reviewing the decision of @ subordinate lodge in the case of two of its members who were convicted of crushing an apple to pulp in their hands and expressing ths Juice and drinking it! That isridiculous enough, but worse remains, for the Grand Lodge not Only seriously entertained the charge, but grave- ly confirmed the decision of the subordinate lodge. Whether members are to be expelled for ing apples wo are not informed. The In- @iana Good Templars occupied themselves with wcightier topics, but were no wiser in their ac- tion. They pledged themselves to vote only for such candidates tor office as are publicly pledged to the passage and enforcement of a strict pro- bibitory liquor law, and when any convention refuses to adopt a platform in spirit with such pledge, “they will insist on the calling of a Proper convention, and the nomination of hon- temperance men for office. This pledge to be binding for life.” The question, “Does pro- tection protect ’” is still muddling the brains of Political economists; but “Does prohibition pro- hibit has been conclusively setiled in the negative long ago. The latest witness on ths stand in regard to the prohibitory liquor law in New England is Mr. Mundella, the Irish mem- ber of the British Parliament who recently trav- eled in the United States. His testimony was not needed, but it is interesting as coming from an impartial but close observer. He said that the law was systematically broken both by law- takers and other leaders of publie opinion. He bad taken wine with the most honored names in America at the largest hotel Im Boston, and when he expre= @1 his surprise that it should be produced where it was prohibited, he was told that “it did not matter, the drink was there.” He asked if they could get spirits in the same way, and he was taken down to the bar of the hotel, where he found the students from the university drinking as much whisky as they had a mind to pay for. oe For its action in dismissing the five cadets guilty of bazing at the Naval Academy the Navy Department is receiving the thanks of the best people and newspapers in all parts of the country, except that many persons think the names of the culprits ought to have been pab- ished. Now let the authorities at West Point and our other educational institution« go to work, determined to break up the disgraceful Practice by the same means, and we shall soon hear little more of it. It is # mean cowardly relic of a darker age, with which no well-bred young man should be willing to have anything todo; but as it might not die out for a good many Fears yet, if left to itself, it behooves those in authority to strangle and bury it out of sight at | ence. Who moves next? a —— | Miss Anna Dickinson in her leetare in Phila- | delphia last Friday evening on “Workingmen and Demagogues” said that no man had ever lifted Limself to eminence who was rot willing to give more than an equivalent for bis wages, or who stopped to count the hours. She took strong ground against the labor organizations as at present conducted, and favored the restora- tion of the old apprenticeship system. On Leth these points she was anticipated by the Pennsyivania Council of the United Order of American Mechanics, which met in Philade!- phia last Wednesday and adopted resolutions against the nnions, and in favor of opening the Workshops to all who desire to enter them as ap- preutices. The adoption of civil marriage ix one of the questions agitating Germany, and some of the who have beén pining for it for years ate itas an obligatory measure. Marriages b teen Catholics and Protestants may also come within the scope of the bill. —-+202- ‘The New York Baptists at their recent con- vention discursed “the weed,” and one of the mest zealous bacco ministers introduced &@ resolution th: ue use of tobaccois an expen- sive indulgence, involving a large outlay of the Lord's money that might be advantageously used for the Kingdom of Heaven.” serting “tea and cofve,” and this flank move- ment defeated the proposition. The National Colored Convention continues its sessions at Columbia, South Carolina. Among its demands, a leading one is perfect equality for all citizens in every respect. It fully endorses all those republicans who have | come from the North tw the South, and depre- cates attacks upon any classin the republican ranks. —— +20e- ‘The fire-proof vault in the Chicago Tribune Duildipg was opened on Thursday last for the first lime since the tire.
