ri =_ —h r EVENING STAR. CROSBY S. NOYES. E«titor. Largest Circulation in the District | § Reading Matter on Every Page. WASHINGTON OITY: FRIDAY -.-00-00e0---- October 13, 1871. Double Sheet To-morrow. For the benefit of readers and advertisers alike, Tae Stax will be published to-morrow in double or eight-page form. It will be an unusually attractive and interesting number. The pluck and enterprise of the Chicago press are, indeed, fitting types of the wonderful ele- ments which will lift the new out of the dust and ashes of the old Chicago. In two hours, on Monday, atter the Evening Journal office was destroyed, Hon. Chas. Wilson, its proprietor, isened an extra from a job office on the west side giving full details of the fire up to 1 p. m. of that day, and announcing in the first line “that Chicago was burning up.” The Times building was consumed tn the forenoon of Monday, but at noon Mr. Storey telegraphed to R. Hoe & Co., New York, for an eight-eylinder press, which was shipped on Tuesday! Wednesday and yes- terday all the papers reappeared. The Chicago Tribune of yesterday has the following edito- rial “Cheer a Tn the midst of calamity without parallel ay ts history, looking upon the Ashes of thirty years’s accumutation, he people of this once beautiful city are resol that Chicago shali rise in with vi we ith £200,000,000 oF $300,000, our men and women are still brave, and they 1 look into the future with undaant “As there has never deen “sapbsweonci They reference to a greatcom- mercial want at this place, and cannot fail to sustain it, * As Chicago See net ee ogee, we do not be- little the gener Cg has fallen upon us. The world has probal 3p Reo coelly seen the like of it; certainly rt since “Ten or twenty sears mai may oo uired to re- construct our fi ‘capital will rebuild it, and ae will oeteeest ming. The | acres the bottom cither—for we have credit in every |, and the experience of one building of Chi- engo’ to help us. “Let us all cheer up, save what is yet left, and we shall come out right. The Christian world is coming to our relief—the worst is al- ready over. In a few days more the dange will be passed, and we can resume the battle of | | life with Christian faith and Western grit. Let | us all cheer w The brutal and cowardly system of “« hazing” — the persecution of freshmen by sophomores at our colleges—which was imported into this country from Great Britain, has already been tolerated too long, and President MeCosh, of Princeton College, deserves credit for the bold stand he has taken t> suppress it in that institution. The bullying of small boys by larger ones is neither chivalrous nor manly, and the wonder is that anything so repugnant to our American ideas of fair play, should be practised by the stronger or submitted to by the weaker youths. Prof. Mc- Cosh is a Scotchman, adroit and clear-headed, and no doubt weighed the effect of his action before he opened the campaign. It is to be hoped he will be sustained by the community, and that others occuping like responsible posi- tions will imitate his example. He suspended several young “gentlemen” of Princeton for hazing new comers, and their companions showed their disapproval of the righteous sen- tence by stoning the windows of some of the Profcssors and absenting themselves from reci- tahens. These young“ gentlemen” should be promptly expelled. Timse wh know best give the satisfactory as- surance that the Chicago disaster is not of such magnitude in a business sense as to warrant ap- Prehensions of scarcity in the articles of bread- stufls. There are other cities beside the Garden City capable of storing and shipping to the At- lantic seaboard the products of the West. Mil- waukie, Racine and Cleveland are fully equal to the emergency, and are prepared to send all the wheat and grain now in stock and ready for Shipment to the ports and depots of the East So well is this understood that the price of wheat iF t and grain has only advanced from four to five cents since the announcement of the partial destruction of the Chicago means of transporta- tion, and the market is now re ported as flat. ——+s0e- ‘The meaning of the word “regenerate” in the Episcopal baptismal service is the point upon which there has been some dissension, the most notable case being that of Rev. Mr. Cheney, of Chicago, who refused to use the word. Yester- day the House of Bishops, in session in Balti- more, agreed to the interpretation of it accepted by moderate churchmen—that it is not so “used as to determine that a moral change in the sub- Ject of bapttsm is wrought by the Sacrament.” The aration was signed by all the bishops, and was communicated to the House of Clerical and Lay Deputies for the information of that bed: picts ‘The fate of Chicago ought to make the people of Washington better satisfied than ever with their system of wide streets, the most perfect Protection against extensive conilagrations. ——<ee-—___ Alex.
