BOSWELL, President Chicago is in ashes, but there is one thing the fire could not destroy, and that is the indestruc- jiness enterprise of her citi- zens. The flames were not yet extinguished when we were informed that five or six daily newspapers were preparing to resume publica- tion in the midst of the smoke and fire; that an order had been telegraphed by a Chicago mer- chant to Buffalo for 250,000 bricks te commence rebuilding; and that another Chicago merchant in New York had evinced the enterprise and courage of his class by buying sugars and syrups which he is going to open in Chicago—his old place being in ashes—say- ing:—“We shall strain every nerve to start again at once, and believe we can have a store bailt and in operation by the time we can re- It must be remembered that the plucky proprietors of the burnt news. Paper offices had their buildings, preses, type, Paper and books—worth enormou stroyed, and that the merchants w It is this bold indomitable American spirit which raised a metropolis full of magnificent buildings in the brief term of forty years—a grand city rising like an exhalation from the marshes and sands of the southwestern shore of Lake Michigan until it was one of the wonders of the world; and it is that same spirit which will accomplish a greater miracle by the re- construction of the burnt city ont of its ashes more beautiful and durable than ever, in as many months as before it took years. Already, from the smouldering embers, the city is gathering strength for a renewed carcer of ind the elasticity of a com- munity whieh built it within the limitsof a brief lifetime, raised its foundations again and again from the morass, drove a tunnel under Lake Michigan, and turned the course of a river against its natural flow, will be equal to even the present emergency. Although five-sixths of London within the walls were destroyed by the fire of 1666, which raged four days and nights, the streets laid waste were nearly all rebuilt in four years. Chicago, a representative city of American vigor and bold enterprise, will do better. With her own recuperative qualities, and the help and co-operation of a great nation, which has an interest im restoring her to her former prosperity, she will arise from her ashes, | stronger, better, and more beautiful than be fore the lamentable disaster which destroyed hundreds of human lives, and two hundred million dollars worth oi substantia! property. ————__-~e-- tible energy and b to stock the new stor ceive these goods.” Prosperous activity, ‘The international yacht race in New York harber for the Queen's cup hangs fire. The New York Yacht Club instructed their special | committee to arrange with Commodore Ash- bury, as representative of the Royal Harwich | Yacht Club only, for a series of races, to de- termine the posession of America’s cup, to con- sist of three races over the regular course of the club, and three over an outside course, twenty miles out from the lightship and return, and in case of a tie another race over one of the above ramed courses, to be decided by the committee, t» be sailed. the winner of a majority of races to determine the possession of the cup. dore Ashbury refuses to sail less than twelve races, and says if the New Yorkers won't ac- cede to that he will either sail his yacht—the Livonia—over the course and demand the cup, which he does not expect to get, or else he will depart with the Livonia for H’old HEngland, The chairman of the Ohio republican State committee telegraphs that sufficient retarns have been received to insure a republican majority in the Legislature of twenty-one on joint ballot fifteen in House and six in Senate, and that Noyes’ majority will reach about thirty thou- Later returns from Pennsylvania make sure the suceess of the republican State and Phila- delphia municipal tiekets, and insure that party the control of both houses of the Legislature. In Iowa, Colonel C. C. Carpenter, the repub- liean candidate for Governor, will have 45,000 majority. The republicans lose one State Rep- resentative in Polk, one in Henry, one in Webster, one in Jefferson, and all in Johnson, and gain one in Dubuque. ——__ see. The people of Rhode Island voted on Monday last against the three proposed amendments to First, to remove the real estate qualification from foreign born citizens; second, to abolish the registry tax, and third, to ibit the appropriation of public money to sectarian schools. All these propositions failed— the first and second being rejected by large majorities, and the third, although it received a majority, of the votes cast, lacked the necessary | three-fifths, and was consequently defeated. —— ee We have not yet had the last of the Heligoland affair. The Islanders, with wonderful unani- wity, have sent a petition to Emperor William, sigued by every man on the Island, askin; him to bring about the annexation of their rocky isle to Germany. If Great Britain lets | the Heligolanders go, Ireland should follow | suit with a petition for annexation to the United their constitution. Se ee ‘The elections in France proceeded very quiet- ly. The Republicans have been mainly suc- cessful in the large cities, partists have been triumphant in the rural dis. triets of central France. The Duc d’Aumale is elected and M. Gambetta defeated. The Thiers government appears to have been unsuccessful Picard and Forcade have been defeated and Generals Faidherbe and Ducrot elected. dno meres Chicago merchants and business men have always responded liberally to every appeal for aid when great disasters have overtaken other communities.
