“EVENING ST ‘AR. FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. [T= iG GARDEN. WANTS. __ FOR RENT AND GALE — CROSBY 8S. NOYES.......Editor. Largest Circulation in the District Reading Matter on Every Page. WASHINGTON CITY: WEDNESDAY..........0etober 4, 1871, Theologians, scientists and humorisis are all having their fling at Darwinism, and, as usual, the needle guns are doing more execution than the heavy artillery; that is, the lively sallies of Rovelists, journalists, and small poets and cari- Caturists are more effective in counteracting the influence of the development thcory on the winds of men, than the polemics of the divines, and the disertationsof Darwin'sscientific opp¢- nents. At the meeting of the Methodist Preach- ers’ Ascgciation in New York on Monday, the Rev. Dr. Foster, of Drew Seminary, read an e-say on, Darwinism,” in which the specula- tiors of the daring theorist were strongly de- noureed. Dr; Porter took the ground that variation of a species moves in a circle, and so does not result in a development, as opposed to the theory of Darwin, that man is the develop- ment of a long, continuous ling of progression He 2) 2 combatted the theory of spontaneous generation, and quoted Sir William Thomson and Prof. Huxley as eminent authorities who had pronounced against it. Now all this is acs«rtion without proof, and one set of theories is as good as another if both are unsupported by evidence. One of the steongest points we have yet seen against Darwin is incidentally made by Way of illustration, in an English novel recently republ‘sbed in <his country; and it has this advantage, that it is exactly such an argument as those of which Darwin's theory is made up. ‘The point is, substantially, that according to the law of natural selection and the transmission Of inst‘ncts from generation to generation, the candle moth ought long ago to have learned, from the experience of many generations of its kind, that fame would scorch its wings, and injure or kill it. Darwin, however, might reply ‘to this line of argument, that even the developed eaudle moih, man, who has the advantage of his own experience added to that of his prede- Cessors, rushes into the dangers which he knows have been fatal to thousands of his kind. Burnt children don’t dread the fire—on the contrary, they cannot be kept away from it, even after tliey have learned by painful experience that it burns. Arbitration has failed to end the long strike at Newcastle, England, which has now entered upon its sixth month, and the trouble is spread- ing. Cable telegrams report that the Newcastle miners in mass meeting re-olved “to insist on their demands, and to persevere m the strike ‘Until its objects are accomplished.” The cutlers and scissors grinders of Sheffield have “struck,” and the carpenters followed their example. The cotton spimners of Bolton joined in the movement, and the spinners of Dundee, Scot- land, followed them. Mr. Mundeila, the mem- ber of Parliament who yisited this country some months since, has been engaged in endeavoring to heal the differences between the striking engi- neers and masters at Newcastle; but has met With no success. In fact, compromise, arbitra- tion, and every other mode of terminating trade @isputes has been tried and found wanting in England. We should except, perhaps, the method adopted in one of the Yorkshire col- lieries, where the co-operative principle has been introduced. and the men have a share in the year’s profits proportioned to their earnings. Strikes under that system are out of the ques- tion. ———__-«ee- ‘The frightful balloon aceident in Indiana on Saturday, where the acronaut fell a mile through the air and was crushed into an undistinguishable mass, bas Probably not been exceeded in horror since the fall of Montgolfer and Romain from a Ballicom heated partly by hot air, from the appa- s of which the balloon took fire, precipi- tating them from an immense height to the €arth. According, however, to the doctors, the death by a fall from a balloon, though apparent- ly 0 frightful, is really the easiest known, ag all sensibility is lost with the fall the frst hundred feet through the air. The horrors, however, of the previous situation, before the fall com- mences, must be taken into account. And an accident of this sort does nétseem in the alight- est degree to deter the aeronauis in their, for air navigation. ‘Phey even contend thatthe rom @i navigation haye been than m the navigation of the For 1,6 seronauts, and 11,000 ascents, less than twenty lives have been lost. A prospect for a removal of the dead-lock in Fespect to hotel accommodations in Washington is afforded by the purchase by Mr. Henry Wil- lard of the interest of his brother Joseph in the well-known Willard hotel property, and it is now Probable that that extensive establishment will be properly fitted up and opened by the time Congress meets. This is a matter-of more im- Portance to the city than one might think at first reading, since what Washington needs more than any one thing is ample and first-class hotel accommodation. We trust thischange is but the beginning of a new era in that respect. ———-<<-- ____ ‘The triennial general convention of the Epis- copal Church in the United States met in Balti- more this morning. The convention is com- Posed of two houses, the house of bishops, and the house of clerical and lay deputies.
