WANTS. - EVENING STAR. | veyeeceee a —— eee Wistreees wy Migs DIGRESS, Non dtiL@ | FG Sod CROSBY 8. NOYES.......Editer. Largest Circulation in the District Reading Matter on Every Page. WASHINGTON CITY: .¥.....eptember 27, 1871. The I American. A writer in Scribner's Magazine notes various evidences of an improvement in the national life and character, and instances the great change that has occurred among the summer pleasure- seekers. At Newport and Saratoga the efforts at vulgar display of the past have been entirely wanting this season. Bathing, driving, walking, Towing, sailing, bowling, and croquet, and pic- nic have given a healthful tone to the sea-side and inland places of recreation, and dress and dancing have been at a discount. In the same direction it is noted that the characteristic American woman of the present generation is larger than the characteristic American woman of the previous generation. Observers at the various summer resorts this year have noticed that never were so many large women seen together before. The American woman has long been regarded by Europeans asthe most beauti_ ful woman in the world, and the writer in Soribner attributes the superior beauty of our ‘women over those of other nationalities to the fact that the typical American is not, and never has been, a beer-drinking or a wine-drinking woman. She is a being raised to maturi- ty without a stimulant, and as this i the singular distinguishing fact in her history, when we compare her with the ‘woman of other nations it is no more than fair to claim that it has much to do with her preem- tence of physical beauty. The samo fact of physical improvement is not so apparent among our men, this writer holds; and for the reason, that our young men smoke too much and drink toomuch. This whole business of drinking is dwarfing the American man. It stupifies the brain and swells the bulk of the Englishman and the German, but it frets, rasps, and whittles down the already over-stimulated Americaa, ‘The improved American will not drink, and he ‘Will not be improved until he stops drinking—so Says the magazinist, ‘Now to our mind there is no such disparity, as here argued, between the degrees of physical im- provement that have been achieved respectively by the two sexes. We are inclined to believe that the American man is drinking less, and we re afraid thatthe American woman is drinking more year by year. Certain it is thatour young men aro drinking less of fiery spiritous liquors and more of malt liquors and light wines than in the past. And we think that an attentive ob- server cannot fail to notice the improvement in the physique of our young men, e=pecially the young men of our cities, of late years, since the introduction of open-air sports and manly exer- cises, base-ball, bowling, rowing, &c., &c., to take the place of bar-room and club-room disi- pations and sedentary games, cards, dominoes, | draughts, chess, &c. Not only are our men | improving in size, but the brighter skin, the | clearer eye, and the firmer muscle, supplanting the flabby desh, sallow hue, and the Dillious lankness, tell of higher health and atriumph over the national demon, Dyspepria. An Incredible Report. We are not disposed to credit the report that the Legislative Committee have agreed to pay $100,000 for a lot for the new Northern Market | in an out-of-the-way place, instead of accepting | the munificent offer of Mr. Corcoran t9 give the | city a spacious lot directly on 7th street. The report, we say, isnot credible. It isnot credit- | able to the intelligence of the commitiee that | they should throw away one hundred thousand dollars in the purchase of a lot inconveniently sitaated, four or five squares from the street cars, and on low ground, when tue Corcoran Square, obtained without the expenditure of a cent, is d'rectly on the car track and main line | Of city and country traffic and travel, and inthe | center of population and growth of the northern Part of the city. Mr. Corcoran offers this ad- mirably situated square for $100,009, to be paid | in market bonds, which proceeds he will devote to the uses of the grand Art Gallery, another of | his magnilicent gifts to the city. The committee will do well todeny at once the Teport so lamaging to their credit that they have rejected the princely gittof Mr. Corcoran and purchased the Ligh priced and unsuitable 5th sweet lot, —<ee--____ Three republican State conventions meet to- day. The most important in its results is that in New York, which meets at Syracuse to nomi- nate the State ticket and proclaim the platform of the party for the coming November election, and in which it will be shown what new phase, ifany, the contest between the Conkling and Fenton-Greeley wings of the party will assume: whether there is to be a compromise or ® continuance of the war. Much intercst is felt, however, in the Massachusetts con- vention t> nominate a State ticket, which meets at Worcester, on account of the fierce contest be- tween Gen. Butler and his opponents for the Gubernatorial nomination. If last night’s“prob- abilities” by telegraph are to be relied on there will be a clear majority of fifty against Gen. Butler in the convention. There is an effort to unite the forees against him, and some new can- didate may sweep the field. Rumor points to | either Mr. Dawes or Governor Claflin. The | third convention of the day is that of the repub- licans at Richmond, in which it is understood a “new departure” is to be taken by the native Virginia republicans against “‘carpet-bag” of- fice-holders_ ————_-~~e+-- ___ Conservative Kentucky seems to be wheeling | into line in favor of woman's rights; at least the court of appeals in that State has constituted itself the legal champion of married women by deciding that if the husband, in consideration of the wife's promise “to restrain her temper and | reform her conduct,” deeds her certain property, he is held to a sirict performance of the contract even if she subcequently leetares him all night and pulls bis hair out in the morning It has heretofore been held that the violation of a con- tcact by one party releases the other from his or her obligations, but Kentucky law always was peculiar. Thus “lovely woman” rules the camp, “the court,” the grave. ———-~ee- At the Methodist Minister's meeting in New York on Monday, Rev. Dr. Foster read a lecture on “Darwinism,” in which he confined himself to Professor Huxley’stheory that “the vegetable kingdom is the sole origin of animal life,” con- tending that vegetable life itself is not Spon- staneous, but derived from other organic sub- stances that fill the air, such as oxygen, bydro- en, ete. On Monday next, Dr. Foster promises te t, be up the theories of Darwin, and demolish who i fewer in Penmanshin: will Meet at the Business oe | BOOKS, STATIONERY and 8UHOOL REQUI | following goods at Coe low prices : dain EXT RACEDINARY!
