EVENING STAR | smancusamscommmacan |avnee me rs EVENING STAR. CROSBY S. NOYES.. .-Editor. Largest Cirealationin the District Reading Matter on Every Page, WASHINGTON CITY: _ SATURDAY........... August 26, 1871. ‘The scrub raee for the republican nomination for Governor in Massachusetts is getting to be ex- citing. Heretofore — opinion in that State indi i, inadvance, the wish of the date for Governor, but this year it is all a muddle, and every day adds to the complications, and to the bitterness of the strag- gle. Worcester and the five western counties, containing a little more than one-fourth of the population of the State, demand that Mr. Wash- burne shall be the nominee. In Suffolk and Middlesex, with more population than the west- ern counties, Mr. Rice is the favorite. It is inti- mated that there is @ secret understanding in Essex county between the friends of Dr. Loring and Gen'l Butler to unite their forces in favor of the latter for Governor and permit Dr. Loring to take the vacant seat in Congress. The eleo tion ef delegates in Beverly is cited as proof o this covert agreement. If such be the case, Gen. Butler will have the Essex delegation almos solid, and with his known strength in the east, the Boston Trenscript, which is unfavorable to him, admits that he is & more formidable com- Petitor for the nomination than he has been rep resented. ———~+ee--____ It will be seen by our dispatches to-day that the yellow fever has gained a foothold in Charleston, and that it is pronounced by the board of health to have assumed an epidemic form. This is startling news, and should ad- monish the authorities of the seaboard cities to take all necessary steps to prevent its spread to other places. While it is likely that Washington will escape a visitation, and enjoy that immu- nity from pestilence with which she has gen- erally been favored, our own authorities should Spare no effort to render us secure from an at- tack. With cholera threatening on one sid@and yellow fever on the other, we cannot be too vigi- lant nor too unremitting in labors to ward off all danger. ———~<~ee--__ The dispatch from St. Augustine to Messrs. Mallory & Co.. of New York, announcing the loss of the steamer Lodona, trom New York for New Orleans, was signed “Editor Press.” There is a weekly paper published in St. Angustine called The Press; but the agents of the Associ- ated Press have been on the alert for confirma tion and details since noon yesterday, and their | failure to obtain them encourages the hope that the dispatch is a hoax, although we cannot con- ee ceive a reason for putting it in circulation if | untrue. As the Lodona was the property of a | Private firm in New York, there would not seem | to be the stock-jobbing motive in this case which existed in the late reported loss of the steamer Henry Chauncey. —-+22- A “dear” Washington “papa,” evidently trained in the way he should go, lately returned home from New York with seventeen silk dresses | and four blonde Wigs of various shades, for his two danghters.—. F. Mail. ‘Who is thie “dear papa”?
