John Doughty, com- mander of the smart little pleasure yacht at Cobb’s Island, and the audience was a party of twenty out on asharking expedition. Next to the renowned Nathan Cobb, the elder of the Cobb brothers, Capt. John Doughty is the great authority of this region in all matters concerning ish and fowl, the winds, the tides, &c., &c., and so we received his words as words of wis- dom. Cobb’s Island, as everybody knows, is famous for its fishigg and gunning, but its most exciting sport is shark-hunting. Rather a bad teeth is laid back flat in sockets in the gums, or fleshy parts of the mouth, so that, to all appear- ances, he is toothless and harmless. But when he bites, these rows of tecth are brought up erect by the muscles with which tney are provided, and the jaws are brought together with a snap like that of a steel-trap. He was of the va- riety known as the blue shark, but as above stated the color is, on the back more like that of & mouse, while the belly is white. As the skin drted in the sun it assumed a beautiful satiny gloss; and blood started from the fins, gills, and tail, apparently from the violence of his exer- tions to tree himself. This fellow was about seven feet long, and the biggest one caught by us was a little under ten feet. The smallest was about two feet— in their cards to Mrs. Fair since ber imcarcera- tion. oy tor bas Sourteen trades’ unions in fail — The Yellow Fever t Witrxcrox, N. C., Aug. 26.—A telegram received from the mayor of Charleston this morning says the yellow fever is in Charleston, and the board of health think it has assumed an epidemic form. Through trains have been dis- continued between Wilmington and Charleston, passengers now ing cars at Florence. Sleeping cars are not allowed to run at all be- tween the two cities. The authorities and citi- zens have been bending all their energies to- wards improving the sanitary condition of the city as @ measure of precaution. s Cuan.eston, 8. How and if by chance the voracious fellow finds him- self there, his instinctive and immediate effort is to get away as speedily as possible. But, for some reason, the bay and channels on the side of the island opposite to the surf liter- ally swarms with sharks, as shown by the fact that no boat ever goes out at the proper time of the day without catching more or less of them. The three requisites to abundant and assured Suecess are slack-water, smooth seas, and a warm sun, but they are caught almost every day without regard to these conditions.
