WASHINGTON CITY: WE ONESDAY.........August 23, 1871. ‘The Star by Mail. Persons leaving the city for the summer or any portion of it may have Taz Sra sent to their address for such time as they desire, at the Fate of fifty cents per month. Orders, accom- panied by the money, should be sent te the busi- hess office of the paper. Powder Magazines in City Lim’ Since the explovion at the Arsenal there has been considerable uneasine. s in the eastern part of the city in regard to the powder stored at the Government magazine- there. At t've A-senal there was only flye hand-ed pouncs stored, (making an exploston felt as far as Alexandria,) while at the magazine: in ques./oh (army and navy) there are about one hund-ed and fifty tons, sufficient, should an explosion occur, to demolish sll East Washington, and shake the Capitol building from base to dome. In n> other city, we believe, is it allowed to store Pr within the municipal limits, and there seems to be no good reaon why Washing on should be especially endanzered. Of course every precaution istaken by the authorities, but the Arsenal explosion, at dead of night, shows that no precaution can ensure safety. There is danger when powder is being trarsferred from. and to the magazines, alo from the work of filling bombs, which is carsied on in the vicinity of the magazine-; and there will soon be another danger, from the sparks from the engines on the Potomac railroad. To these may be added the mysterious perils from unknown causes, such as operated at the Arsenal, whether from spontaneous the movements of vermin, or what not. Itis suggested that a fitting place for the storage of this powder could be found at Fort Washington, now practically useless, and from there it could be readily transferred!by water to the Arsenal or any other point, in small quantities, as needed, — oie A Valuable Industrial Element. We have before rs a s.mple of terra extta flooring (ile baked from clay found within the limits of the city, which strikes vs as a remarka- bly fine ar_cle. In points of color and fineness and firmness of texture it compares favorably with most imported specimens, and if the clay should be manipulated with the same care, we do not see why it would not equal them in every respect; and, judging from the sample in our possession, it can be used successfully for every purpose to which that useful ariiele fs applied in England and on the continent, including minor statuary, table-ware, vases, pedestals, capitals, window-caps, flooring, drain-pipe, ete., ete. Here would seem to be an opportunity for a comparatively small and judicious investment | of capital, with an almost absolute certainty of | handsome profit. But not th‘s alone. The de- velopment of the deposit and its mantfactare would afford constant and remunerative em- ployment to a large number of operacives, and add in every way to the wealth and grow.h of the city. Furthermore, the co-t of everything in that line would be reduced t> purchasers and | consumers within reach of this source of supply, | as it could be made here much cheaper than it can be brought from abroad, when the first cost, expenses of transportation, duties, and profits of importers and wholesale dealers are taken into account. At any rate, the matter seems to be worthy the attention of capitalists and enterprising men, and we trest those of them who are tculy in- terested in the welfare of the city will look care- fully into it. That, at least, will cost nothing, and can entail no porsible loss. President Grant has been interviewed by a reporter of the New York Herald at Long Branch, and although the account of the meet- ing is spun out t> a considerable length, the knight of the pencil does not seem to have been very successful in drawing out the views of the chief magistrate on the questions of the day- ‘Thvs, in reference t> the Louisiana difficulty, the President merely said that the statements, in the ease varied, and “the muddle dowa there is b ot much comfort in that for either of the tiovs. In referenc> to the and Tammany fraucs in New | York General Grant expres-ed the opinion that they would defeat the democracy in the State this fal), at least that “either one of them ought to.” The reporter having mentioned General Butler’s opinion that the militia should not have fired on the New York rioters unt'l the riot act bad been read, the Pr-sident said “the mob knew they were violating law without hay- ing it formally quoted to them. Our late rebel- lion was a riot on a big scale, and I think it lasted as long as it did jost because we wanted to read too many riot acts at the beginning.” His remark concerning the want of harmony among the New York repablicans has the same epigramatic force : “Well, I don’t think there is any real lack of harmony among the republicans in New York. Seme men there who are republicans in nai claim that there is discord, \e When an election the discord always clears p ce that soldiers grumble y have something else to | think about. is 5-208, Sand aly , 1867.13: ares Sencagaly aah i Btock (By Bankers’, Brokers’ Lewis Johnson & € tat Sra ay pit Sits i; do, pret Spree eee. Warmoth's savage attack on his opponents, in his red-hot stump speech in New Orleans, has produced a harvest of replies, some « them as cavstic and bitter as the Governor's cwn pointed remark«. Among the mildest of r. Warmoth’s foes is one whom he accused of trying in vain t> bribe him with fitty thousand lars for the Nicolson pavement company. The gentleman responds that he failed because Warmoth wanted seventy-five thousand dollars und two and one-half per cent. on the net nee Which is rough on W. see “ The W: ashington Star, for atime past under the able editorial management of Kev. Our sprightly and usually well-informed New York mind. We are pursuing the even tenor of our way in sunny contentment; and though both good and lively have neither D. Tae Sacanizs or Femate Teacners.—The Chicago board of education has just fixed the salaries of the women principals of grammar sebools at the same rates as thore paid to men principals. The press thereupon tender them their sincere congratulations, the Port charac- terizing their act as “the iiumph of justice.” The ute was a very decided one, twelve in the Affirmative to two in the negatire. The republicans carried the eighth congress- ional district of Kentucky in the recent election by nearty 3,000 majority on the Governor's vote.
