In reference to the sensational story recently set afloat by ex-detective Wood, in the New York Sun, relative to the wrecking of the steamship Golden Rule in the Caribbean Sea, May 30, 1865, and the robbing of the vessel of $1,000,000 in greenbacks, the property of the United States, Secretary Boutwell says he knows nothing whatever of the parties implicated by Wood, and thinks the whole thing an invention. Ac- cording to the report of Comptroller Taylor, made in May last, the government money carried out by the Golden Rule consisted of $1,000,000 compound interest notes, and $162,150 in 7-30 notes, Treasury drafts, and 5.2) bonds. After the occurrence of the wreck efforts were made, under the personal supervision of Messrs. Rufus Leighton and Victor Smith, who were the e government for the conveyance of the treasure to San Francisco, to reach’ the box containing the money, which had been placed under a large amount of Daggage in the hold, but without success. Both crews ed rapidly, the St. John with louger and the Tyne with shorter stroke than last year. The latter obtaimed a lead of a half a length, and kept it for a quarter of a mile. At that point the Tyne crew, whose stroke averaged 42 per minute, weakened, and the St. Johns crew formed ahead, and at halt a mile brought the stern of their boat on a line with the bow of the Tyue.
